Someone told me that if your ignition key is not in it's keyhole, you may sit in your golf car with your beverage. Is that so?

Did you know that not to long ago, Florida like most states had drive up liquor sales. Drunk driving went down when Florida closed the drive up windows. New Mexico also closed all there's. Was one of the smartest things that each state did.
There should be zero tolarance for alcohol consumption and motor vehicle operation. If you want to drink, don't drive....then you don't need to worry about a citation when an officer is doing his job.

Maybe the thing that makes them stop or keep on patrolling is if you are making a nusance of yourself, don't know just wondering,I personally have seen many people sitting in their carts enjoying an adult beverage, and I have saw some served that should have been denied, perhaps the real difference is did you buy from square or did you bring it from home

But did you ever wonder about the people sitting at the square drinking.Do they not get in their carts and cars and drive. So its alright for them do drink and these people where maybe 20 feet away. Maybe your idea is to ban drinking and selling at the squares altogether. Well that will never happen. Remember not all people who have a drink are bad.Maybe just bad by the people who do not have a drink.

People who have drinks are not bad people. They are just people who should not operate machinery, motor vehicles, if they chose to drink. So many people drink and are impared, but think they are not impared, until it is too late and injure or kill someone because of their poor judgement. If you want to drink, have a non drinker drive you or walk.

I agree. I am the daughter of a brewmaster so we had alcohol in our house growing up, we do now and feel there is nothing morally wrong with drinking...but I always heard don't drink and drive and I repeated it to my kids and now to my grandkids. Over and over and over again.

Drunks don't usually agree that they are drunk.

I would be interested to know, but that doesn't sound right. Isn't the "open container" law the same for cars and carts? If you could drink as long as the key wasn't in the ignition... would that mean I could sit in my push-button-start car and drink? I most assuredly don't want to, just curious.

I agree with the above two posts and all the others supporting enforcing the open container law.

Most people are saying you can only drink at the square. Not sure of that. If you buy a beer at the hut and walk across the street and sit down at the picnic tables near the lake,an you get a ticket. Do not think so. When they have a festival and tables are on the streets and you are drinking a beer, can you get a ticket,I do not think so. I am there almost every other night and I do not see bad behavior. I think so many people are on medication and are driving their carts and cars, this scares me more. Just my opinion.

There are so many people on medications and drugs driving their golf carts around, and yet they concentrate on people on the squares. This sounds like entrapment to me.

I assumed this form was seniors! Guess I was wrong!.

We should not be second guessing the police that are trying to protect us.

The bride and I simply do not drink when we are driving a car, a golfchart or a boat. And yes we have an awesome time at the squares.

4 people we know just lost their lives (teens) 10 days ago due to a drunk driver. The families will never be the same, ever.

I second guess everyone, including, and especially the police. When there is money to be made, they know where to find it.

I sure glad you posted this as it was my understanding also.

My confusion is this - Is it against the law to buy a drink at a bar on Main Street and still get a ticket while in route, (on foot), to the sqaure?

Maybe an officer from the sheriff's department can be asked to touch on this subject at the regular golf cart orientation meetings.

Everyone knows the rules about drinking and driving on a roadway, it's the gray areas that cause confusion.

While at the square if you stand near your cart while drinking a beer = NO ticket.

While driving your golf cart on the golf course and drinking a beer = NO ticket.

Tickets like the OP was given are only given at SS and not at LSL, although the OP didn't mention what square was involved.

Selling liquor from the walk-up bars located on the the squares can add to the confusion. Signs could be attached to some of the poles at the squares stating "the consumption of alcohol while sitting in your parked cart will result in a fine".
