When I moved here 2 years ago, I saw in the rec news that there is a canasta group that meets on Fridays, so I called. I was told that there are established tables of players and if I like I can come up there and see if anyone needs another player, or sub or even if I like I can try and get my own group together with other people interested in playing. Two years later now, I play every Friday there and the groups are great. We just had a new group start up. One new woman wanted to play and she spoke to some friends and they are starting a new group. We don't intermix the tables because different tables play different rules. There are some basic rules, but there are different levels of how hard or easy you want to play the game. Before I moved to The Villages I played Canasta every Thursday for 7 years, I also play Hand/Foot and Samba, but my favorite is always Canasta, to me it is more challenging. So, if anyone is interested, and there appears to be by reading this thread, get 4 to 6 together and come up to Laurel Manor and play. They don't offer lessons, but by reading the past threads you can go to other rec centers for that or even pm some other posters to see if someone wants to teach.

I don't know where you heard that BUT we certainly welcome new people.

Also, lessons are given Wed night at Colony at 6 (I think). Call the lady that runs Wed night hand foot/samba and ask her about it.
