The same situation happened with me in New Jersey on our one year-old Honda CRV. It was a legitimate chip in the windshield.. the person from the windshield company repaired the chip right there then Honda took the car and changed the oil and rotated the tires. I paid the man upon completion of the fix and my car insurance company did pay the $189 Repair bill.
Next week I’m going back for another oil change and tire rotation at same dealership before driving back to The Villages and interested to see if the windshield guy is still inside the service department.

I took the car to the same place because it was nearby and they handle and sell tires as well. Well, don't you know, I pulled up to the service bay and what did I notice on the shop floor when I got out of the car? The exact kind of nail that was in my tire. Did they put one in my tire during the oil change? Hhmm...
Jenkins Honda did that to me. I was told they would contact my insurance. When I told them I had GEICO they said forget it.

Actually, I think insurance companies will use any excuse to raise their premiums.

First, they blame the weather. Then they blame the lawyers. Third, they blame the roofers. Fourth, they blame the window guys. Insurance companies would be best satisfied if they could charge you the entire cost of replacing your vehicle as the premium and then refuse to pay any claims.

Just as an aside, I checked what car insurance would cost in my summer home in Virginia as opposed to what I pay in Florida (on an annual or semi annual basis). The rate in VA was less than half for the same coverage. I am going to bet you that the insurance companies have some rigamarole to tell us why Florida rates are so substantially higher. I seriously doubt if the claims or lawyers or weather is that much different between the two locales.

It's just insurance companies being insurance companies and the politicians who work on behalf of the insurance companies.

Default Car insurance

When we first moved to Florida and we changed insurance for our vehicles, same vehicles, same company (AAA), the cost to insure 2 vehicles was twice what we paid for 3 vehicles in Massachusetts. Plus they only would quote me a 6 mo policy. I left. I think having a 6 mo. term only gives the insurance company a better chance to charge more on the next 6 mos.

The Florida law also requires that the insurance company cannot charge a deductible for a windshield replacement.

Sad but true.

I remember my neighbor years back would call their insurance and submit a claim for a broken window.
Twice the window on my truck cap broke, $500.00 each time, both times it cost me nothing because insurance covered it. The rates did not go up.

I took my 2025 car in to have the oil changed. One of the first things that was done, even before my service advisor greeted me was to clean my front windshield. Later a person who did not work for the dealership approached me stating that as a courtesy to me, they had inspected my windshield and found several stone chips in it. They said out of safety concerns they could have my insurance company pay to replace my windshield. I had no idea that the chips were even there. I checked and they seemed very small and I was concerned that replacing my windshield was not really necessary. I think that this type of inspection could lead to a lot of insurance claims to replace the front windshield which may not be necessary. It looks like the type of schemes that roofers use to get insurance companies to pay for a new roof. I fear that car insurance will skyrocket even more for what appears to me to be unnecessary windshield replacement. I told them that I would call them after talking to my insurance agent.
Has anyone else run into this courtesy windshield check?
To answer your ?, No. Inurance companies wrote the policy and agreed that there is not a deductible on a damaged windshield. Windshields cost about $500 and roofs cost a lot more. Not going to affect premiums.

They probably get a referral fee since moat garages don't replace windshields. Don't replace the windshield unless you have to. You run the risk of in being installed wrong. You might have a wind noise or a leak. Doesn't happen often, but idoes happen.

Angry

Shame on the dealership for having a non-employee touching your vehicle while in their service line!

No, have not heard about that. But another very important consideration here is that it is almost guaranteed your windshield will be replaced with a non OEM piece of glass which will negatively impact the resale value of your vehicle.

I had an oil change done last week at Jenkins Mazda in Ocala. That is exactly the same thing that happened to me. I politely declined. My windshield had mineral spots on it as a result of hotel parking in New Jersey where their landscape irrigation soaked the side of my car. After washing my windshield, they disappeared. No spots === no chips. And I agree with you --- it's another ploy to get some money from insurance.

Windshields are more expensive than a few thousand $$ and cost is based car make and model. 30 years ago, I had some chips in my window on my Porsche and back then it was going to cost $2000 and my rates would go up. When I was switching insurance companies a few months later, I got my window replaced the last day I had coverage with the outgoing insurance company so I didn’t have any insurance increases.
