I need someone to replace our swimming pool bulb. I've gotten quotes from
Patriot/T&D and Pinch a Penny which are extremely high. T & D has replaced the bulb before and it only took 10 minutes for one man on the side of the pool. Any referrals for this job would be appreciated. |

Have you tried looking for a Youtube video to show you how to do it yourself?

It's really not that hard and won't get electrocuted either. Bulbs and gaskets on Amazon, how to on youtube. The worst thing you may have to do is actually get in your pool, and you'll need a screwdriver.

And if you are going to DIY, may as well make it an LED bulb which will last much longer and use less electricity.

Thanks. I'm really not a DIY kind of guy. I'm willing to pay for it but not at the prices I've been quoted.

A skilled handyman should be able to do this. I agree with above replace the whole light fixture with an LED fixture.

If you recently replaced the bulb and need to replace it again, you are likely getting water in the light. You can usually see the water in the fixture if it has a leak. In that case, you need either a new gasket (no big deal) of if that doesn’t work, a new fixture (bigger deal). If the gasket solves the problem, you can get a multi colored LED bulb replacement at a reasonable cost. If you have to replace the entire fixture, LED fixture pool lights are expensive. I was able to change my own from the top of the pool with a snorkel mask. I agree with purchasing the parts yourself and getting a handyman.

One of the part-time jobs I worked while in college was swimming pool cleaning and maintenance. I once helped my boss change out a pool light. I unscrewed the bolt holding the fixture in its socket and pulled the fixture out. There was a power cable coiled up behind it that was long enough to let the fixture rest on the pool deck. I handed it up to my boss and then waited until he had changed the bulb. Then he handed it back down to me and I coiled the cable back into the socket and replaced the bolt. Total time less than 10 minutes.

I've replaced mine before and won't bother to do it again. Can be tedious and tricky to do. Save the aggravation and just cough up the money. Well worth the headaches.

I took the light out myself. The pool company wanted $400 for the bulb, which I would then have to install myself. I bought a bulb on Amazon. Need to replace the gasket too.
My light is about 4' under water. There is a single screw at the top holding the fixture in the housing, but at the bottom of the fixture faceplate there is a tab that needs to be slipped into place. The tricky part is staying underwater long enough to get the screw in far enough that the fixture won't float up. The electrical cord, which is long enough to get the fixture out of the water, tends to want to uncoil. I used a 20 pound dumbell on my lap to keep me underwater long enough and it took multiple times going down to get it assembled. It only takes one trip down to take the fixture out. I would guess that most Villagers would not be able to do this. However, it's a 15 minute job for a handyman. The pool companies would probably use a scuba tank. My bulbs are 12V so no danger of shock. I know this doesn't really answer your question but it gives you an idea of what's involved. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Amazon.com |
