The US Census bureau has more than one Census; it has a few. One is the Population and Housing Census, which is sent once every 10 years. Another is the Economic Census, which is sent every five years, and not to every household. You can read all about the different Censuses here: Our Censuses, U.S. Census Bureau Censuses |

I wouldn't answer any survey with any personal questions. And, I definitely wouldn't play along with the government and answer any questions about ethnicity, gender, etc. Just fill in, "human.". They already have too much personal info.

Feel free to toss, which I did, but the mailings continued with strong wording until I complied. Doing the research, my mailing appeared legitimate.

It is probably the American Community Survey which seems to be run non stop by the census bureau. I mean you do have to justify this government entity somehow the years the real census is not taking place.
If you read the instructions, it says that you can just skip any question you don't want to answer. I believe it also says you can just opt not to do it. That is what I did with 90% of the questions the first time they sent it to me. The second time, a few years later, I just threw it in the garbage. After awhile you will start receiving phone calls asking about your progress and if you have any questions. I just stopped answering them. Then they had people coming to my door and since I was away most of the time, I would find notices on my door. I just ignored them. Then, finally, I was home and somebody came to the door asking about it. I just told them I was not going to fill it out. She then said "So, you are refusing to participate?" I said "Yes" . She then turned around and walked away and I have never heard another thing about it. That was in 2018 or 2019.

Strong wording. Lol. Until they put me behind bars they get two middle digits. Not happening. Need to stop fearing zealous paper pushers. All talk, little action

The only information you are required to give are names and ages of all those living in the household. You are not required to participate in the "long form" even if you receive it. During the 2000 census we were given the long form, if the form is legitimate, it will state right on the form the required information as well as the statue that requires it. You can google the statue and verify that it's only names and ages of those living at the address.

I was a team leader for the 2010 census. Do I believe the census was 100% accurate? No, why? You can't get every house in the US, some refuse to answer, others lie on it (I don't understand why). Some of the team leaders encouraged their people to fill in forms for people they couldn't find. (I found out that their boss got some kind of bonus.
I did the best I could to get accurate numbers. |

On a (somewhat) related note, In September 2020 Minnesota Dept. of Health instituted a program called "Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER)" where health dept. employees showed up at homes unannounced, mainly in the MSP metro area but in rural areas as well, to ask families about their COVID vaccination status and offer to do testing. To say that they received a cool response is an understatement. MDH of course put the best possible spin on it, but there were reports of doors slammed in faces, workers being asked to leave the premises in words that would get one banned here, and in some instances, armed confrontation of workers. The CASPER program was ended soon after it started--a wise move, in my opinion. Most Americans are not sheep. |
