Question Change Own Golf Cart Tire?

Has anyone changed their own golf cart tire?
I ordered a tire with rim on Amazon....maybe not the smartest thing I have ever done!

If you don't feel like doing it, Wal-Mart will do it for a pretty reasonable price.

Is the tire coming already on the rim, or does it need to be installed?

Installing on to the rim is easy if you know what to do, but could cause you grief if you don't.

You will need to ease the tire onto the rim and I usually use two flat screwdrivers to do this. If the tire has a tube you will need to put the tube in after getting the inner portion of the tire on the rim first.

If the tire is tubeless, you will need to bring it to a gas station that has free-air to get the air in at high pressure so it will "pop" onto the rim. Using a tire inflation foot or hand pump will not generate enough force of air to do this.

I have not changed a golf cart tire, but I hve changed car and bicycle tires. I have found that usually the smaller the diameter of the tire, the harder it is to do. I'm guessing that if you have never done this sort of thing then you can save yourself a lot of grief by taking it to Walmart and letting the people that have done many of these do it. You need to spray some soap or other lubricant on the tire so it will slip over the rim and that can get kinda messy. Also, if you don't have a compressor, you will have a hard time getting the tire to seal on the rim.

Agree with above smaller they are the harder! Probably need to watch utube video on lawn tractor tires removal Similar to GC rims see if you want to attempt this?

It will be harder getting the old tires off than putting the new ones on. Probably at minimum need vise, big dead blow hammer, WD40, and 3 medium to large long screwdrivers would be nice. The vise along with long punch holes the rim in one of the mount holes or the center hole if small enough and vise grips holes the rim to the punch clamped down where the rim and the punch meets so the rim won't flop around.

the wd40 seeps between the rim and the tire bead to allow easy break down of the tire from the rim more is better than less (may have to use the BFH to get it started off the rim). With the tire bead broken off both sides and the side your not trying to pry off the rim pushed to the smaller inner part of the rim you can start prying the tire off the rim using the three screwdrivers. Usually only takes two but one has to be left between the tire and rim till you get tire bead starting to slip off the rim without slipping back under the rim.

Once you get one side of the tire off the rim the rest is easy. Again as suggested may just be easier to got to wally world and pay few buck to have it done. I only do it cause I know how and beings I still working don't take the time to have it done.

Um, fellas, TMI. Her old tire is on a rim. Her new tire is on a rim. She needs a jack to raise the cart; strong arms to remove the lug nuts; strong back to lift off the old tire and replace it with a new one. Personally, I'd rather drive cart to Walmart with new tire and have them do it. Have changed too many tires in my life to want to do it now. Walmart easier and money well spent IMO.

Be sure to apply the brake and block the wheels on opposite side to prevent the cart moving forward or backwards, if you elect to do this yourself.

But driving to Walmart sounds like a better option.

If I was at The Villages I would have changed it for you.

At the last Crispers meeting, I was talking to one of our experts on golf carts and he was saying that some jacks are not safe. I trust Frank7.

Some things are just not in my pay grade. I would call an expert or take it to an expert.

Do not let the danged golf cart fall on you Karron.

Her old tire is on a rim, wow tell how much some of read close in posts!!!! Most are right unless you have done this or have watched and aided someone changing tires AND RIMS out. Best to let Some one else do it.

BUT, If you have jack and break the lug nuts loose before you raise the tire (providing you know where to place the jack and have the parking brake on), DON"T get under it (I can't see how or why you would do That) matter of removing the nuts, lifting the old tires & RIMS off (GC tires not that heavy, WAY lighter than car tires) lifting the new tires & RIM up and aligning the holes, putting the nuts on snugging them down, remove the jack go to the other wheel side (front or back don't make difference).

Now tighten up the lug nuts on the tire that you just changed with weight of the cart will not let the tire spin while you are tighten the nuts (how tight as tight as they was when you got them off or as tight as you can get them, unless you have torque wrench which torque would be around 60 foot pounds or so depending on the thread size of the nuts). Do that three more times and your done (after you checked all the lug nuts again ensuring you didn't miss wheel). I would still take it some where as suggested if you not mechanical skilled.
