We will be moving to the Villages later this year and will be changing NY licences and car registrations to Florida. I think we are set about the licenses and what we need or the registrations but I was wondering about a few of things.

Once the registration is moved how long do we have to get them reinspected in Florida?
Are the inspections done at garages similar to NY or at State Inspections stations?
Is here anything special about the Florida inspections I should be aware of such as rust?

Any information or suggestions to help us along with the process would be appreciated.

We did not need any inspections here....

When we went to register, it is quite expensive for the 1st year. We found out that it would be good only from the time we register to the b-day of the person whose name is first on the title. If you register in Aug. and the b-day is Oct, you only get 2 months. We waited until just after my husbands b-day in Dec.

Also if your car is newer than 6 months old you'll have to pay the sales tax difference on the purchase of your new car from your home state to this state.

For example I purchased a new car in Maryland in March and after trade-in I owed $9000 and we had 6% sales tax, which came to $540. I moved here in July to Sumter County which has sales tax of 7%, so I owed 1% of $9000 or $90 for the difference. Since my car was 3 weeks short of being 6 months old, I left the tax office and returned 3 weeks later and bought the new tags without paying the sales tax. However you'll want to bring your checkbook anyway, cost of new tags for two years in Florida was $485.

You should bring your Social Security card and passport with you to get your FL drivers license. I didn't have my SS card so I need to go back.

Also you should bring your birth certificate, which I did. However they don't want the copy from the hospital with the gold seal but rather the copy from the health department. I had to make a second trip just because of that.

You need the NYS title and must bring the car to the County Office with you. They need to check the VIN visually.

Don't throw away your old plates, you need to return them to Albany (with a special form). When the insurance company notifies NYS that you are no longer insured in NY and they don't have your plates back, they issue a warrant. Next time you get stopped, you'll be arrested if there's a warrant out for you.

Many New Yorkers forget to do this and put their old plates on their golf carts. Bad-Bad !

As a retired NYS Motor Vehicle Supervising Representative I'd like to help clarify a few things.

What actually happens is when you cancel you NYS Insurance on your vehicle is the insurance company enters the cancellation on your NYS DMV record. If your plates haven't already been surrendered, you will then receive a notice to surrender your plates or face suspension if you fail to do so. If the plates have not been surrendered within (IIRC) 90 days from the date so ordered, your drivers license or privileges will also be suspended for a period equal to the uninsured period.

Frequently when someone moves to another state and no longer have the plates to turn in, (or even if you do have them) it is acceptable to send proof of the date you registered in the other state, usually a copy of the registration. This proves to NYS that you no longer have an insurable interest as of the date it was registered out of state and any liability ends on said date.

One thing that I never heard of is any warrant ever being issued for anyone's arrest for failure to return the plates. If your caught using the vehicle itself with or without the NYS plates on them, you can be subject to arrest if there is an indication on the DMV records that your vehicle is uninsured, but that's about it! However, that should not happen if your vehicle is properly registered and insured in Florida despite the indication on the NYS record. You could however be arrested if you're driving the vehicle in NYS while any suspension against your license or privileges is in effect, and that includes for an open suspension on the insurance cancellation that took place. If in any doubt about your status you should contact the NYS DMV if you're from NY - http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/callorvisit.htm or the appropriate state authority if your from another state.

We just registered our two cars last month. It was quite the ordeal. we brought passports, copies of utility bills, copy of our lease agreement and proof of insurance. Unfortunately, our insurance was from another state and they would not accept this. We had to return after we got FL insurance. The woman at the DMV told us they had recently increased the "impact fee". It cost just over $900 to register two vehicles. Bring your check book because if you want to pay with a credit card, they charge extra for this.
