Default In-home business

Hi everybody: My wife is a cosmetologist (hair, color, wax, mani/pedi, facials). We would like to offer these services in our house. Not looking for a bunch of clients just enough to help pay the bills. Does anybody know if this is allowed in The Villages?

I believe that it should be allowed. This country exists because of the hard work and determination of many people who own and work for small businesses. How come only the Developer gets to have fun and make money. No, it is not allowed. For one thing, parking is limited in the Villages unless you pay to play. Whatever you do, don’t put a sign in the window.

However, it might be possible to run many internet based entities from you house without breaking the Villages rules on inventory and shipping. And, some people run home watch and other services from their home without people coming to their home.

Don't know the licensing laws for cosmetologists in Florida, but home businesses are not allowed in TV. You can run the risk if doing it anyway. Your wife won't be the first nor the last to do hair in her home here, but it is against the covenants. Another way to go is to go to the client's home. That is acceptable.

Not allowed- and for very good reason. In my opinion , you would be ill advised to move to a community where you planned from the outset to violate Covenants that you agree to abide by in the first place.

I, for one , would report such a violation , if I were nade aware of it.

Anyone who would encourage you to move here under such circumstances is really not serving your best interest.

I think going to the clients house is an excellent idea. This would work as well with tax preparers, personal trainers, etc. I see dog groomer trucks once in awhile in our neighborhood so that must be allowed.

I know of at least one couple that run a bed and breakfast from their home, is this also breaking the rules?

We've run a bed and breakfast several times. It is called visits from friends and family. We have pretty good food and an excellent entertainment venue.

Must be pretty tough unless they have a large Premier. Did they convert the lanai to a wine bar

No, it would not be allowed to have clients come to your home for appointments.

Yes, you could do it if you went to their homes.

Of course, you would have to obtain a small business license from the county AND pay taxes on the sales and income.

You could try and dodge the license and taxes but, in all liklihood, someone will "drop a dime" on you and you may get hit with stiff fines and penalties.

Nobody dropped a dime about the tree mystery and there is other illicit stuff going on.

The deed rules ->

Properties within the Subdivision are intended for residential use and no commercial, professional or similar activity either maintaining an inventory, equipment or customer/client visits may be conducted in a Home or on a Homesite.

There are plenty of underground business enterprises going on in The Villages. I have personally used the services of three of them in the last two years, including one recommended constantly on TOTV.
