Default Comcast cable modem recommendation

I should like to buy a cable modem, rather than paying Comcast $7 per month to lease one

Do you have a modem that you use with your Comcast internet connection which you would recommend?

Thank you

Hi Gat0r

Are you saying that you have a cable modem for sale for $30 (but no phone number on which you can be contacted)?

If so, what make and model is it?

Thank you

Can an apple express for WIFI be added to a modem from Walmart, and does that interfere with the long distance telephone capability from Comcast?

Remember that if you have telephone through Comcast, you have to get a modem that does both internet and telephone. An internet only modem won't do it. Comcast has a list of compatible modems.

I was told to buy the Motorola $99 modem at best buy. The installer said that people don't have any problems with this one when storms come thru. They have a $59 Motorola but even the salesman at Best Buy said to get the best one. It has worked fine ever sense. Your are seldom dissatisfied with the best.

The new comcast modems that support the internet and phone come with a wireless router built in.

I have a Motorola Surfboard SB5101U. Internet only. Works great! If I remember correctly, it was under $50. Also bought a cheap Belkin modem for wireless.

Spoke to Comcast when I bought my own modem. Person I spoke to recommended the Motrola Surf Board. I found it on Amazon and ordered it.It works great and comcast helped me sync it up to their system.. No troubles at all .Pays for itself in no time..

We just were told by the Comcast tech that our modem needed updated (it was 11 years old). He advised to purchase online since Comcast only rents them now. I did a little research and purchased the Motorola Surfboard SB6121 modem on Amazon.com. It was $89.00 with free shipping. We already have an Apple wireless router so this worked great. They also offer a similar model that has wireless built in if you need it. Personally, we like the Apple router being separate with the security it has, but then again we have all Apple products in our house so it seems to work flawless with these. FYI, when we plugged in our new modem it did not work. You have to call Comcast customer service and give them the MAC address and model so that they can register it. Then it immediately worked. Hope this helps.

P.S. When we called into register the modem, the Comcast customer service rep said she owned the same modem at home and that it was a very good modem.

Bing does the modem also support Comcast telephone service? I would like to use the Apple express as we are on Apple products too.

No, the Apple Airport Express is purely a way of creating your in-house wi-fi network and will not interfere with your Comcast phone service in any way.

I have the same setup, actually with an Airport Extreme plus an Airport Express as a "repeater" with no problem whatsoever.
