Default Garage AC

We are thinking about installing AC in the garage (2 car plus golf cart). If you have installed AC in your garage what is the approximate cost? Suggestions for installation?

3.5 ton AC Carrier installed by Munns about $5000
Very pleased with cool garage and not much higher power bill. Have to insulate garage first

A 2 ton mini split should be adequate for a 2 car plus golf cart garage. You will need to insulate attic and garage door if not already done. Consider the SEER rating of the unit to keep the operating costs as reasonable as possible. Mitsubishi units have a good reputation and have a good warranty. Expect installed cost around $5,000. Get 3 or 4 quotes, installed prices can vary a lot. Make sure installer takes care of the required permit.

Would you put Ac in your oven ?

Unless your prepared to insulate your garage and install insulated garage doors you'll be throwing money out the window

There was a long thread about this last month as well. Are we rehashing the same threads now?

Why would I want to A/C my garage? Not like I’m out in hot sun peddling around? Little sweat and exercise can be good for beer bellies?

Because I read the same threads ?

And how is mentioning that we've had this discussion before a bad thing?

Considering the same thing at some point in the future, insulate door, walls and ceiling , would one of the portable ones work, just a small hole in the wall vent... ???

I didn't see it last month and this is interesting, not a rehash for everyone.

We use a portable floor model AC vented to the outside in our 450 sq. ft. glass enclosed lanai which faces north of west. It does a good job on all but the hottest days of the summer. The garage has much more cubic feet of space and cannot be insulated as well as a lanai, I don't think it would do much good to have one out there unless its blowing on you.

When you are a member of this forum longer than three months, like yourself, you will come to see that multiple topics are a rehashing of the same thing. Even someone pointing out that this was just discussed is repeated ad nauseum.

My personal rule is only comment if I can add value to the discussion or answer a question. That is probably why I do not have 150 posts, or more, a month.

Lots of experience about mini splits and portable A/C units installed in garages on the garage journel website. Mini splits work great if you insulate ceiling and garage doors on a block and stucco home. No need to insulate garage walls unless you have a standard wood/siding style garage. The portable units are not a good option in a garage application.

No, I wouldn't put A/C in my oven because I want to bake in my oven. Yes, I put A/C in my garage because I don't want to bake in my garage.😊 Seems like a very simple concept to me.
