It takes a lot of chickens and ice cream to cover the membership cost. Oh I know tires are a good price also but the wait for service is unbearable and I'm not sure I need to buy 2 or 3 times the size or amount of things I need. But at least you have something to do while you're waiting the many hours to get your tires serviced. Almost forgot, looking through random sizes of pants is always a good way to kill some time at Sams - if you haven't looked for mens pants there you are missing a real experience.

If you are buying an expensive diamond ring or any other expensive jewelry, Costco is the only place to buy it. They will accept returns with a full refund forever, no time limit. Most jewelry stores don't even come close to the Costco return policy.

In wasn’t long ago, in the last few years, Costco was number one retailer of diamonds and wine. It may still be today.

Here are couple pictures of rings when I was ring shopping 3 yrs ago. I ended up going to Blue Nile as Costco was way over my budget. They did have less expensive but I didn’t like the setting and they don’t allow you to purchase just the stone.

It's not the money it's "the experience." And the chickens are good too. To each their own. I can easily cover the membership cost in 1 or 2 visits.

Friends of mine in Hawaii know a man who used to be involved with Costco's liquor purchases and disclosed some to them. I was amazed at the high end sources for their house brands.

A couple years ago the handle on my Costco favorite carry-on bag gave up the ghost. Just for the heck of it I took it to the store to see if I could exchange it for a new bag. The employee who helped me told me they had not sold that bag for years and looked up my date of purchase which turned out to have been twelve years prior. He refunded my full purchase price in cash. I have to confess I was a little embarrassed to take the money but I did.

I buy Michelin tires there, some clothing such as shirts, jeans and jackets, household paper products and cleaning supplies, light bulbs, some tools, small appliances, TVs, meats and seafood, fresh produce, Keurig coffee cups, my favorite granola cereal, eggs and dairy, vitamin pills, tooth brushes, get prescriptions filled, and much more. Costco cannot beat IMHO!

Long story short -- not a fan of bulk shopping and if Costco ever does build here, I suggest it be somewhere way away from me. Southern Oaks sounds perfect. :-)

I picked one item at random for a small comparison of my own. A 12 pack of Bounty select-a-size paper towels:

Walmart: 101 sheets per roll for $18.34
Boxed: 91 sheets per roll for $19.99
Costco: 120 sheets per roll for $23.99
Sam's Club: 110 sheets per roll for $19.98

Well, the differing sheet counts are just weird but they're all about 2¢ per full sheet.

Let's try Heinz ketchup, 44 oz. (Just the size two retired people need, I figure.)

Boxed: 7¢ ounce
Sam's Club: 6¢ ounce (only sold in packs of 3)
Costco: 6¢ ounce (only sold in packs of 3)
Walmart: 8¢ ounce (for 64 ounce bottle; not available in 44 oz)

Clear as mud. A person could spend half their retirement days shopping around to pinch pennies! And my heirs would still have those three huge bottles of ketchup to deal with.

Personally I always end up with too much bulk of whatever it is when I buy in bulk and I'm not convinced I'm even getting the lowest price.

I have started to buy stuff like that from Amazon. Just bought a 12 pack of coconut water for 30 percent less that Walmart, and a package of sandpaper for 75 percent less than Home Depot. Free 2-day shipping, and I don't have to drive anywhere.

As has been mentioned by a plethora of other people (and it's overwhelming success/loyalty), Costco provides so much more than just bulk consumables that the average two person household (especially at our age)... shouldn't buy from anywhere.

One of the great parts of this country though, is our ability and right...to choose where we shop.

Build a COSTCO and we will come;

Walk the floor several times to the sample stations, buy 1/4 pound of sliced turkey (very thin) with waxed papers between the slices (sample please) , 1/2 dozen eggs, 1/4 pound of butter, and 2 cookies. Time for a hotdog, slice of pizza and coke for $1.50 to share with spouse while pilfering some napkins, mustard and catsup packs and sugar substitutes. Oh, don't forget the senior discount (and Buffalo Card Discount). Better use the bathroom. Top off the gas golf cart and check the time for 2 for 1 Happy Hour at the next stop.

Yep, that's what their business model is looking to find.
