I carry golf balls when walking my dog at night in Lynnhaven as well as a whistle and a large flashlight. And the first thing I would do if a coyote approached is pick up my dog and scream as loudly as I can.

I do think that your dog is much more likely to be attacked by another domestic dog, hit by a golf cart, or by a car than taken by a coyote but we should be aware of the danger especially in areas where the coyotes have lost their natural habitat. The older neighborhoods in the Villages see few coyotes, those that are quite newer though are getting a lot more sightings.

If a coyote is identified as killing pets, then I do think that coyote should be killed. Hopefully, by someone that knows how to do this humanely. Two cats were taken off of a lanai and one dog was snatched in its front yard at 12:30 AM.

Two cats taken off a lanai? You keep mentioning that with no back up at all. I know you do research and spend a lot time documenting such, but the cats/lanai story is just hearsay and second or third hand. Unless there is specific evidence, it's not worth losing credibility over.

Why keep blaming the victims of these snatchings for not reporting these to the authorities? Many people would rather share these traumatic experiences with a few friends, neighbors, and family members. I would assume these people are telling the truth before questioning their sincerity. I know where the one in Lynnhaven lives. If I can find some gentle way of bringing this topic up with them, I will. The Buttonwood snatching was described by an examiner of the screen of the lanai who posted about this on TOTV. Why would they lie about these two incidents? Denial that this can happen is an ever present problem in victim services and dealing with the victim's recovery process.

Thanks for doing this Kitty. Lynnhaven seems quite safe for me from coyote snatchings by in large except for that very probably coyote mauling through the lanai on Livingston Loop at the west side nearer the golf course. I worry more about speeding golf carts and cars/trucks and the sometime falcons which get ducks and rabbits.

I have only seen three coyotes in the ten plus years I have been in the Villages in the Lynnhaven/Belvedere area. I do keep my eyes open at night though.

The phone call went something like this: Their wild animals. There is nothing we (TV) are going to do. You can call Florida Fish & Wildlife but they won't do anything unless it becomes a threat to people. I said "so you don't care"? TV: WE care, there's nothing we can do.

You are right on all of these except coyotes....they are an invasive and non-native species and need to be eliminated just as pythons in the Glades need to be hunted.

The person (known to me) who confirmed the events directly knows and spoke with the two people who lost their cats. One totally disappeared (screen broken open). The second loss was confirmed by patches of the cat's fur in the yard (again, screen broken open).

Thanks for the help. The lady who told me about the Lynnhaven snatching (cat's fur in the yard) does not strike me as someone who spreads idle gossip. She is usually quite serious in other words. She also seemed very upset by it as she has at least a dog she walks in Lynnhaven.

A lot of people do not know about TOTV, too. So, perhaps these people are not big computer users? I do not sell TOTV to neighbors all that much. I do talk about it sometimes on Facebook and at Doggie Doo Run Run.

Loud noises do not always work on coyotes. It depends on the learning curve of the animal and how hungry he/she is.


On another thread some walkers tried to scare off a coyote with noise and it stayed. Maybe, they did not try screaming at it? I carry golf balls now just in case. Easy to throw and fit well in the pockets.

I do also carry a whistle http://www.keepdoggiesafe.com/dog-whistle.html but I tried it at Doggie Doo Run Run on a digging pooch and Nick just looked up at me a little bit-- three seconds maybe-- and continued digging. Muffin crouched between her master Eulene's legs. Nick was after a mole or vole.

We have been here 28 years. We are on Ob Hills golf course. I have seen coyotes on and off for years. Also all other kinds of wildlife . We need to respect them and be careful.
