Default Daily Sun

Hi Everyone-

I have been eyeing a job advertisement for the past several months at The Villages Daily Sun. There has been a job posted for a paginator at the paper and I have noticed that it continues to be posted month after month. I have been considering applying (I am from out of state) and do not know much about the area or the paper. My curiosity has gotten the best of me and I am wondering if there is a reason this position has not been filled. Is anyone able to tell me honestly what the work environment is there? I wondered if maybe it was a bad environment, the pay was not great or if there was a particular reason this position has remained open for so long. I also considered the possibility that maybe they just haven't had a lot of response for some reason or maybe they are just very particular about who they hire. Any information you may have about this is appreciated.

Thanks for your help!

I haven't seen the ad nor have I worked for the newspaper you are questioning. I would imagine, like most newspapers, the pay isn't great. Plus, it could be an evening shift. With some many retired people in the area, IMHO, even if they have experience with QuarkXpress or some other pagination program, maybe they don't want to work evenings. I dunno. You and I could guess a million reasons the job vacancy is still open. Apply and see for yourself. You may love the environment and the people.

I just pulled up the ad and it specifically states, "Schedule & Hours:vary & to include weekends, evenings & holidays." My guess is that is the deal breaker for anyone with the background. The area is a retirement community.

Welcome to Talk of the Villages (TOTV). I hope someone else can help you.

I am probably going to regret this if it is a simple answer but...what does a "pageinator" do?

Page layout.

Cuz, do you think they still use Quark and not in-Design?

A paginator is the person who puts the pages together for a newspaper. That's a fairly simple definition of what it all entails but basically, that is what it is. Thanks for the replies!

I dunno. I've used Adobe and Quark. I loved them both.

I have used In Design, Quark and Adobe all three. I have been in the business for about 15 years so have a lot of experience. I am at a job that is decent right now but have considered moving to your area to be closer to my parents. I am having a hard time convincing my husband but thought maybe the prospect of jobs that we would both love might sway him in my direction.

The ad in the paper lists both programs cuz. I am a wizard with an exacto knife and a wax machine. I used to be a stripper before I moved to the newsroom.

I thought InDesign was Adobe. What was the old Adobe program called?

Yes, InDesign is Adobe. The old one was PageMaker. I've used all three too. And yes, I've even done the old exacto knife/ wax machine, although I wasn't a stripper.

Remember the old wire-service machines? And typewriters-- when you literally cut and taped your stories. And typesetters. Ugh!

That's right. I was going through the alphabet trying to come up with the name. Yep, I was a four-color stripper and even made the separations. At the time, we thought it was cutting edge technology. I ran an Ab Dick Press once just because I wanted to learn how. Also a fork lift in the press room on a dare and I learned to set color on a Goss press just because I had to wait on papers at night and I was a big flirt.

When I worked in the camera dept. I would go into the newsroom and go through the piles of AP photos and stories coming off the AP wire. I was hooked at an early age. I'd wander around in the darkroom with the photographers and help develop film. We had a room as big as my living room with the "computer" in the newsroom that had to have an air-conditioner unit to control the temperature. Typesetters were just going out of style when I got my first newspaper job to work my way through college.

I hate when I go through the alphabet trying to remember the name of something and then it starts with a P or later. lol.

never did the fork lift! Did learn to make the separations and put the plate on the press.
