Default Disposing of 9 volt batteries

We just changed the batteries in our smoke detectors, covered the used batteries with black electrical tape. Can anyone tell us where to dispose of them? Thanks

I seen battery disposal box at electronic box store (best Buy) over on 441/27 pass Rolling acres road.
