Target response time for neighborhood AED's is I believe under 2 minutes. When you are talking a heart attack - seconds count - so yes they are efficient.

Our neighborhood in Mallory have two AEDs and we have received CPR and AED training along with additional training follow-ups. As far as as how efficienit, it is a fact that the sooner CPR is started the better the chance of survival. So, if a neighbor can get to someone sooner than 911 services the greater the chance of survival especially with an AED brought to the patient. Well worth the investment.

Every minute after a respiratory/coronary attack you lose 10% of your chance to live. 911 is excellent, but sometimes they are out at another call so you the response may not come from your closest emergency center. The AED program provides CPR by a trained neighbor responder until another trained neighbor responder comes with the AED. This can be a life saver until the medics arrive and take over. You hope you never need it, but it is a reasonably priced life insurance policy to have at your access in your neighbobrhood. We all have our activities, meals out, Happy Hours, shopping, trips out of the Villages, so many ways we spend our dollars. This is one investment that is long term and life saving. I encourage people to support them in the Village community.

We have 3 in our Jacaranda Island neighborhood in Pennecamp. Many residents went to the AED/CPR training and were certified. Several people signed up to be responders. We did have a call in the neighborhood that was dispatched as a cardiac event when it was smoke alarms going off at 1AM. All 3 AEDs and 20+ responders showed up in under a minute in all manners of dress. Luckily it was a false alarm but a wonderful example of how the program worked. Neighbors helping neighbors.

Our 911 team response does the best they can, but their response time is not always that great, due to no fault of theirs.

We have just started to put together the AED program for our area of Buttonwood. It covers 131 homes, and we'll be getting 3 AED's. As far as CPR, Unfortunately, I've had to do it twice when I lived in New York. Fortunately, it saved the person both times, as I lived next door and the ambulance didn't get there until I had his heart going. Nowadays, they don't do mouth to mouth when doing CPR, just compressions. Also, anybody that volunteers as a responder for the AED program, will be trained for free by the Public Saftey dept. in The Villages. The AED program is a wonderful program, and can save lives. I know several people in The Villages, that have used the AEDs and saved a life. Trish

Our neighborhood which is also new has collected the money and several volunteers are ready to be trained. We have 53 homes and will have two units. Not everyone will opt in, but everyone will be protected. When the 911 call comes in, then a call goes out immediately to the trained volunteers in your neighborhood who go to the home and administer chest compressions until the unit is brought from the nearby home. The unit self directs.

I can tell you how quick..at our first house there was only hand full of people in the area...as i was coming in a lady was standing in the street yelling..had just moved in no phone...not even a cell...I hit my onstar button told them what was needed. I could hear the sirens before i got into the house...yes without cpr it could have been a different story..but Doing CPR on a dummy and on a real person is a very different story...you have to make sure your compressions are delivering the needed pressure...and even if you have taken a class take it again..Our response teams in the villages are quicker than in any area i have seen....
