A local physician who raked in more than $18 million from Medicare in 2012, is no longer participating in federally reimbursed medical programs.

Dr. Asad Qamar, who has cardiology offices in The Villages, Summerfield and Ocala, had the distinction of being the second-highest recipient in 2012 and 2013.

The U.S. Justice Department announced earlier this year that it was joining a pair of whistleblower lawsuits against Qamar, and his medical group, the Institute for Cardiovascular Excellence.

Qamar still holds a Florida medical license.

Since coming under fire, Qamar retained a New York public relations firm which aided in the release of a video in which Qamar professed his innocence.
