Plus one here for that route. We drive to RI but take 2 nights to do so, we also travel with a dog. For years we traveled I-95 and used to stay in Rocky Mt. At the time Candlewood Inn Suites was our pet friendly hotel choice. As time went on they seemed to have a lot of long term residents and it got a bit trashy. We then chose Country Inn and Suites that was next door. We'll never travel i95 directly back to New England again. Between DC, Baltimore and i95 in Ct., it was white knuckle driving. The above route with 84, 81 etc is more relaxed driving.

12 hrs? We're coming from DC and THAT is just over 12 hrs!

Fredericksburg is a good choice; my brother has used that on his trips to/from upstate NY. It was our dinner stop on the drive to Md. Depending on traffic and the number of stops you make on the way (gas, food, stretching) 12 hours is in the ballpark.

If you drove thru NYC & DC on a weekend day is it OK or just as bad now?

For Northern NY - consider going North to Charlotte and then up thru Harrisburg PA and avoiding much of I-95

Avoid rush hour at all costs but lots of places to get stuck in traffic between NYC and DC.

I like VA, but more important is last potty stop right before DC. DC at around 7 or 8 pm and NYC about 10 or 11 pm. No rush hour, no stops. Or the last leg on a Sunday.

We also stop at Fredericksburg, lots of good reasonable price hotels and dinner options. I always bring a Shepard pie and heat in the microwave, too tired to go out for dinner. Also pack lunches and snacks, only fast food options with long lines available. Waste of time. Leave TV about 5 and hit Fredericksburg 6-7.

Wiz right thru DC Sunday morning.
