I've noticed a reoccurring theme as I read many posts on these sites. Whenever some sees something they don't like their first reaction is to suggest that someone pass a law to prohibit it. Does this really make sense? Some folks just want the right to do stupid things. I'm not sure legislation would ever stop that. For instance, last month I'm riding my motorcycle back from the store. I pull up to the gate and some gal behind me starts screaming at me, "where is your helmet, where is your helmet". She yells at me all the way down Chula Vista. I think she needs to get a life and stay out of other peoples,,,especially mine.

I understand what you're saying but you are an adult and can make your own choices. No one but you are responsible for your choice to not wear a helmet. The woman yelling at you should have known that and should have kept quite
Little children and animals depend on adults to make the right choice for them except in Ohio I guess. Did you know they fry hamburgers there? I didn't!

Some people climb mountains, some ski race downhill at breakneck speed, some kids climb tall trees and play on old fashion monkey bars, some people drive cars with bald tires, and maybe text at the same time, some scuba dive under water, some fly small planes through thunder storms, or sky dive out of perfectly good planes, or fly ultra lights with chain saw motors, some people continue to smoke, some overeat and are overweight, etc., etc. It is their choice. If you want to live in a highly regulated and controlled society consider moving to North Korea, or some such place.

You are correct about adults need to make smart choices when it comes to children. Yes, I know about the hamburger thing. Fact is, I've fried many in my day, but not to folks who would cream at me riding down the road. LOL
I hear some folks fry hamburgers in other states too.

I am going to print this and frame it. I will hang it right next to the picture of my sweetie frying hamburgers.

Yes, adults can do whatever they want, however, when it comes to the safety of children, that's another story. I definitely would have done what the OP did, maybe they would wake up.

You see this is the difference in what our mothers told us to do. Some mothers would have yelled it out. Some mothers would have smacked you for yelling it out.

I don't disagree with protecting children, but perhaps this discussion will be read by someone who will pause in allowing their golf cart to be driven by someone who is too young or by someone who might endanger their grandchildren.

It is a cultural difference we are discussing on whether it would help to yell out a criticism. Whether it would make them think, or just **** them off.

On that we can argue all day. I doubt if many would disagree that what Chatbrat saw was dangerous. And few would not have cared. It is how to change it and how far we would go to make laws that have to be followed. It is a basic difference that many of us feel about how far we should go to make something illegal. It sure as heck hasn't helped having laws when it comes to stopping illegal drugs and that issue is terribly dangerous and destroying society as we knew it as children.

Very good post.

Some people get to be older by not doing too many dumb things and some do not. :D

Can you see getting around in a golf cart in the streets of Columbus, Ohio; New York City; Tampa; Las Vegas, or how about Los Angeles?

Before I retired and moved to TV there were many times I was sitting in Indianapolis rush hour traffic thinking I could be going faster in a golf cart!

red tail 04-05-2016 11:51 AM

where are these people from that run around yelling at people and blowing their horns when they don't like something?

keithwand 04-05-2016 11:55 AM

(snipped)

I wonder if it would do both. My initial reaction to someone yelling at me would be anger. But I would spend the rest of the day going over the incident in my head, and maybe some enlightenment would occur. Or maybe I wouldn't do that child-in-cart thing anymore just because I know what people are probably thinking.

If chatbrat said something, it might change the way they do things. If he didn't say anything, it definitely won't.

When I first read the OP original post.. I thought - how rude.. BYOB.. but then after reading all five pages of the following replys, I re-read the OP post and thought... yes, they were right to say something.. maybe it would make the cart driver and passengers think about how the children could get hurt.. but now I am hungry for a fried hamburger !!!!

Charm and good story telling will change people's attitudes and behavior quicker than rudeness though.

I do believe that suggestions like this would work in certain parts of the country like the Twin Cities but probably not with many New Yorkers at least not with the many New Yorkers I have met here in the Villages and in Palm Harbor. There are exceptions of course. A native Minnesotan who moved to New York and now lives in the Villages, maybe.

Tal As "New Yorker born and transplanted Twin cities guy I can tell you my response to your aforementioned students would be "do you think I just fell out of a tree."
