It is not necessary to roll down the window. It reads through glass.

Forget the "investment". If it ain't broken, which it isn't, don't fix it.

There are more than zero who blow through the gates now. That number will certainly increase if a driver mistakenly believes the new system makes the gate automatically open as he approaches it.

I haven't seen any information on whether they are removable or how they might be tamper resistant. My GUESS is that they cannot be removed without tearing them and making them unusable. This would discourage theft and prevent someone else using your card but it would also require purchasing a new sticker for certain vehicle damage and if the vehicle is replaced. The sticker also would not be able to be transferred to a rental vehicle or a friend's vehicle.

We're real happy with ours. Had it 3 years and use it every day. You pay more than $20 for a meal out- and that ends up in the toilet the next day. The idea that you consider that purchase a Fat Chance is puzzling.

When I first encountered the Villages gates I wondered why they were using office door cards and not parking gate cards. So I'm glad to see them come to their senses.
However, everyone is right to question: why use cards at all? Why not just have the gates in construction mode? It could be to add to the illusion of security, as someone mentioned. But what nobody has mentioned yet, and what is probably closer to the truth, is because with a card you can be tracked. Yes, I know that the license plate cameras at the gate already do that. But the card is an extra level of confirmation. Now, this tracking could be for safety reasons, e.g. say some Villager is reported as missing. Where were they last seen? Which gate? But someone else reported that in the meetings when asked directly about construction mode, this safety answer was NOT given, and instead they gave cagey non-answers. That makes me think that they are probably planning on selling the data to someone else as the main goal of the sensors and cards (and probably are already doing so). I'm sure there are businesses that want to know how far the average Villager travels from their home, how many times a week they leave their house, etc. and now with the new cards less people will opt for the red button so the data will be more accurate. If a business near gate 'A' can get a list of all people that drive through gate 'A' on a given week, they can then target them by mail directly. The article mentioned that it was going to be in the headlight. I doubt that, because they make a inside-the-windshield version. Last edited by sowtime444; Today at 07:33 AM. |

They are not Worthless. The majority of the gates stop traffic at golf cart/bicycle crossings, allowing those vehicles a safe crossing. They are not intended to keep non-residents out. They are working exactly as intended. People mistakenly compare TV to a Gated Community, which it is not, nor was it ever intended to be.

How is that any different from the current gate cards that can be cloned? As I understand it, with both the current cards and the new cards, The Villages has the ability to deactivate the device remotely.

If the concern is that someone might sell their home but continue to use their tag, that can be resolved in a couple of ways: 1. Ignore it. Since the red button will let anyone in, a retained tag would simply eliminate the need to open a window and push the button. 2. IF the system is configured properly (big if) then the ID programmed into a particular tag can be disabled in the system when the associated Villages ID card is returned/disabled. I suspect the Villages already has a process to invalidate ID cards when a resident moves out so it should be a simple process to invalidate the UHF sticker at the same time.

How is that a problem? If they no longer live in TV, they can still drive right on in, like the rest of the public. You just won't have to wait for them to open their window and hit the red button.
