front door peep holes and viewers
I would like to buy a viewer/peephole for our door. Looking for advice on what to get, where to buy, who to have install...
The only ones I have seen at Home Depot and Lowes are the very small ones. I was hoping for a larger viewing area - not having to squint! |

Why not just buy wireless camera? But, you may still have to squint due to the size of the camera screen

I bought one at Lowes or Home Depot about 2 years ago that has about a 1 1/2" viewing screen. I installed it myself.

I agree, if you do not want to squint, you will probably need to get a camera version. As I recall, some of these replace the door bell button, so no wiring, and the viewer can be moved around. These will cost much more then the traditional round glass peep hole. Also, if you can install a couple of screws and reconnect the low voltage wires you should be able to do this yourself.
Hope this helps.

Don't worry about the peep hole--the average door in The Villages can be kicked in with very little effort. Security starts with a steel frame & extends to the door. If there is a bad guy who wants to get it while you're looking thru the peephole the next thing you'll remember is waking up in the emergency room, after they find you from under your front door.
If someone rings my door bell, I,stand aside & ask- in a loud voice hello-who is it? I have a firearm , in my reach all the time. |

I have a LOREX brand, two camera system with a 9" monitor that I've used for 2 years with good results. One camera is trained on the front door (hidden in a big plant) and the other one is trained on the driveway/street. I can easily see who is at the door (which is solid) from a good distance from the monitor. There is also a voice intercom built into the monitor and camera's. Cost was $300 from Best Buy in Lady Lake. I can add two more cameras to the system but I took a different approach to security in the rear of the house. Cameras need to be plugged in to outlets but communication between cameras and monitor is wireless. It works out of the box but you will want to carefully consider where you position the cameras for best view. Better: you and a neighbor both buy the same system and mount your camera on their house looking at your house and vice versa.
