I just got my insurance renewals. I wasn't too concerned because I haven't had any claims and I have small car and small home. Thought it might be a little above inflation rate.

Auto is going up 26% and home is going up 67%!

I am looking elsewhere for insurance. The first company I called for auto told me that I had a bargain. He told me that he could beat my price if I reduced my liability coverage from $250,000 to $25,000. He said that the average bodily injury claim in Florida is only about $15,000 so I was over-insured.

I am still looking!

Wow! People do not buy liability insurance for the average claim. If so, they would self insure. They insure for the possibility of having a bad claim against them. Agent is looking at getting a claim filed against him or her for making a "bad" mistake.

LOL. I think you are underinsured. I have $1 million in liability. One way to reduce your auto insurance is to drop the uninsured motorist coverage. I have zero. I would never file a claim for that, and it is mostly redundant with medical insurance.

I have a $1 million umbrella policy. The good news is that it went down 1%!!

I will check on dropping the the uninsured. That is the second biggest premium - behind bodily injury liability.

The Villages insurance wasn’t cutting the mustard on any of those fronts so we dumped them about three years ago.
The issue is that the growth in houses doesn't match the growth in agents at TVI, and they have decided to limit their staff growth. The other issue is that with the entire insurance landscape changing in FL due to last year's hurricane, the agents are swamped with above average number of calls to look at alternative pricing.

When insurance rates go up with about inflation, no one much cares. .
when rates go up exponentially higher than inflation, people care, and they aren't staffed for everyone wanting an alternative price which might not exist from their list of suppliers.. .

Realize that all prices in FL are going to go up, and greater than inflation. .

Labor pricing is going to continue going up as the higher rates are sought in Orlando. .
the catch22 of living in rural FL with a major city 60 minutes away. . either you spend more to keep good people or you get by with mediocre people

pick your poison

It's estimated that 20% of drivers in Florida are uninsured. That's why UM insurance isn't cheap.

It covers much more than medical bills. Damages from accidents include money for pain and suffering, disability, death, etc. UM coverage pays for all elements of recovery caused by and uninsured, or underinsured driver.

Consider the claim of the woman cyclist injured by a hit and run 95 year old. She suffered devastating injures which will last a lifetime. This could happen to anyone. Underinsured coverage will at least minimize her damages to some extent

So you need both uninsured and underinsured coverage to protect you and your love ones from such a loss. It's a must have coverage in Florida for sure.

Sorry, but I don't agree. Most people don't have enough uninsured motorist coverage to pay for the things you mentioned, or to get a good lawyer to take your case. In most cases, the uninsured motorist coverage would be wiped out paying for the medical bills when you already have medical insurance to cover your bills. It's redundant. For pain and suffering, you would need to sue your own insurance company, which I would never do. I have plenty of medical coverage to pay for my own medical bills, and that is all I need. What is the point of paying for insurance that I would never use?

Speak to Mikalya at Farmers insurance on 441 next to Babettes. She’s excellent.

Uninsured motorist coverage is not a primary payer for med bills, Medicare or health insurance is. There is no legal requirement for UM to pay for med bills and Medicare can not pursue payment for med bills from UM coverage. Apparently your theory is Medicare pays and UM pays the med bills, really?

You don't have to "sue" your insurance company to get UM benefits just as you don't have to sue them to get damage to your car paid for.

Worse case scenario, you get killed by a UM. Few med bills. Happy recovering nothing?

Good luck!
