Don, I have not worked on an original Yamaha fuel gauge, however, I would adjust so the float can go almost all the way to the top of the tank. Then double check operation by letting it go to the bottom, you will probably need to force it down. Now senders have been known to go bad, so you can test the sender by removing it from the tank, and manually moving it between the full and empty positions WITH THE WIRING CONNECTED.

The sender is essentially a potentiometer connected to a float. A potentiometer is. Strip of carbon with a sweep. As the sweep which is connected to one of the two sender wires moves the length of carbon and therefore the resistance Increases from the other connection point on the sender. The sweep has a mechanical connection, it wears out

I’m pretty sure you’re wrong cause I have 2012.5 that fuel injected.
