Could it have been a street legal cart?

The most annoying thing for me is when my speedometer shows I'm going 20 mph, and somebody who can go 21 mph gets on my tail and slowly passes me over the next 2 minutes.

If your are in an accident with a cart one of the things that will be checked is the governor on engine. If it's been tampered with then bingo you are driving an unregistered auto with a big fine and other problems. I've known a couple of people who disabled the governor on their carts but once they finally understood the liability the had they went and had the governor fixed. |

Yep, seen it. And the other cart starts to fade a little and lose ground, but the other driver stays with it. |

Or, if you are being tailgated, you can pull over onto the grass and let them pass. I do this because I find it less nerve-wracking than someone breathing down my neck.

If your Cart has the potential of doing 40MPH but you never exceed the speed limit of 19.9 or 20 MPH and your involved in an accident who is to say you were exceeding the legal limit? Exactly who is it that has ever gotten a Speeding Ticket? Not a story of your Hairdressers Cousin. Actually who? Where is the Court Record of the ticket being issued?
If someone is tailgating just let them go by, easy peasy. I would say that one of the most important things is keeping your passenger alert to what's going on so they can properly brace themselves when turning or in an emergency stopping situation. Keeping your tire pressure to proper standards is important to. These cart are not to stable over 20MPH, about as stable as Jello! There is no way the foolishness is ever going to stop, the key is keeping yourself safe. At the base of the Historic Side Bridge, they just installed another Camera. It is across from the one installed last year that was closer to the pond. It is definitely a Camera. What's up With That? Guesses? |

If your cart has the governor set so that it can exceed 20 mph, it is no longer considered a golf cart in the state of Florida. If it is set so that it can exceed 20 mph, whether you drive it faster than 20 is immaterial based on Florida law. Over 20, it is considered an LSV (low speed vehicle) and, by Florida law, is to be registered with the state, licensed, and must carry liability insurance. Since the law is not enforced locally by law enforcement, many people ignore it.
I do not care if I am passed by a faster moving golf cart; our two carts have not been adjusted to exceed 20. My wife and I are frequently passed by faster carts. But as I am passed by a cart exceeding 20 mph, a cart without a legal Florida license, I just wonder why the owner has chosen to be a law breaking citizen.

FL law requires that a golf cart operated on a public street should not impede the flow of regular auto traffic. (In other words stay in the golf cart lane) If you pull out into the auto lane on a public street in a golf cart to pass another cart and slow the flow of traffic by autos you can be ticketed. This is not the case on the trails in TV but on the streets. If I pass another cart on a street and leave the golf cart lane it is very seldom. I never exceed 20 miles per hour on any public street. The total fine and court cost is close to $500. If a policeman or deputy is around you can be ticketed.

My Cart is legal. We cranked it up, it's easy just to see what all the buzz is about, The Need For Speed! I think we got it all the way up to 35MPH and instantly decided you should have your head examined to want or need to go faster. Many people do it successfully for years with no problemo but who knows what the future holds. As long as they don't upset my trip let them pass me all day. My Rat Race is over. I'm with whatever is Legal. I leave 5 minutes early for my trip.

If your golf cart is CAPABLE of going 22MPH and even if you are only driving it at 19.99 100% of the time you are in violation. Worse yet, if you get into an accident with your 22MPH CAPABLE golf cart and if your insurance company finds out you will likely not be covered (read your policy). It is ILLEGAL for GC dealers to even sell a GOLF CART CAPABLE of exceeding 25mph and call it a golf cart vs. an LSV. "CAPABLE OF" are the key words here. |

Well, it's for the same reason 90% of the vehicles on the FL Tpke drive 85+ or 50+ on Morse or BV or don't declare all their income to the IRS. It's "because a large number of people do it" and GENERALLY no one bothers you for breaking those laws. Do you ever drive 40mph in a car on Morse or BV or 75 on the FL TPKE. GENERALLY no harm is caused and cops have better things to do. It's wrong, but lots of people do it.
