Suzanne,

I have a TomTom as well. It works for some areas - not for others. Mine is about 18 months old. I looked into updating hte maps and the price was about 70 pounds (i.e. about $140). You could but a new one for just a bit more.

I gave my son-in-law a Magellan for Christmas - their's has most of the new streets (like ours Heath Springs) but not our house number.

I just updated the TomTom map US & Canada. Mine was way behind in updates and in order to get the latest update I had to install the previous updates. It all came to $79. I'll probably go for a yearly subscription for $39.

In the browse map feature I see that pretty much all of The Villages is covered. It's good down to 466A. It's good toward the west to Bailey. Also, I notice that Creekside is not there since it's relatively new. I was curious since we stayed there during our Lifestyle visit. All in all it covers alot of The Villages so I'm satisfied.

We have a Garmin that has our location on a new street off of Odell Circle. I just asked my husband how he did it, and he thinks he went to our house, then pressed "Mark Location." All I know is, I can go to saved location for my Villages Address, and my Garmin directs me the whole way, so I know it can be done.

On the Garmin web site you can look at the new maps before purchasing. I did that and found that Hemingway was not included yet, so did not purchase. But I did see where there is not a 2009-1 map, have not tested that one yet.

Thanks Don. I'll check it out again. Maybe they woke up and realized that if they would charge a reasonable price, that people would upgrade.

From what Under55 said, it looks like I should have gotten a Garmin. Free map updates? Can't beat that!

You should be able to buy an update from a Nissan dealer or google it! On a Lexus the update costs $450. I passed on that one.

My Tom Tom also does not recognize south of 466. I was told that all the manufacturers use information from NavTec, so possibly this year will be the update we are all waiting for.

under55,

What model Garmin do you have that you were able to d/load software for free?

My hand held Garmin Vista GPS unit is free but my street directory Nuvi 200W software comes at a price.

Default Garmin updates

I have a Nuvi 660 and a Vista from garmin. Although you can connect the Nuvi to your computer and update from the Automated Garmin Update software, this only provides updates to your software and operating system. I assumed when I got the device and started "updating" that it would update the maps also. Then I saw yearly Map Updates for sale and wondered. So Garmin puts out an updated Map each year that costs about $69.00. If you just use the online updater, you can stay current with the various aspects of your devices' working software (i.e. traffic warnings, voices [German update, Romanian etc] and new colors or types of vehicles [motrocycles, monster trucks]). That does not update your maps. For that you need to purchase a map update CD and download the updated map to your device.
I have the 2008 and was in TV in February and it worked well. I did not use it to navigate the various streets as I was trying to do that on my own. It did get me there from Orlando without any problems.
