what are your thoughts about gutters on a home in TVs. I see some homes have them and some do not. I just bought a new home here and I was wondering about it. Thanks

We've only got the builder supplied guttering on our house - the small section that is above the front door. After several years, we've noticed that the water running straight off the other areas of the roof (where there are no gutters) tends to beat a small rut in the grass where the water hits - it parallels the roof edge. Not the end of the world but it is noticeable.
Gutters help divert the roof water runoff away from the house foundation which is always a good thing. Bill ![]() |

We can get some pretty substantial rains here in season, as you may already know. We had a gully develop around the house close to the foundation soon after moving into our CYV, even with foundation plants in place.
Knowing that our sandy soil would continue to erode at this 'drip line' and that our home was on a slab, we opted to have gutters and downspouts installed immediately. Relatively inexpensive, we considered it a small investment toward peace of mind. I believe that The Villages now includes gutters all around on new CYV construction. Not certain about other home series. |

We've owned a cottage home and now a designer home and immediately had gutters put on both of them since the homes are on slabs.

Anyway, it's worth it to have a dry lanai, which we didn't before the gutters. |

Has anyone connected the rain gutter down spouts to under ground pipes to channel the water to the street or other drainage areas?

Go outside during the rain and watch the sheets of water run off your house. You'll be able to tell then where you need them. We have them on the front and rear surrounding our unenclosed lanai. We definitely needed them.

Our landscapers will do that during their job. In the front; in the back, no.

We were a "little disapointed" to say the least, after having a designer home built for us to see that we only got two token gutters on the front of the home. I mean talk about cutting corners.

I don't think it is the builder cutting corners... having gutters all around the house just isn't something that is regularly done in Florida.
Rest assured that all building codes are met here. In all the posts you can read here, you won't see complaints about our homes falling apart from 'cutting corners' on the construction. Just isn't so. Maybe the people who set codes determined that the soil drains fast enough in these parts that gutters and downspouts are not necessary except to divert water from say, the front entrance. I don't know. As I mentioned earlier, we added them for our own peace of mind. But we are not native Floridians. I'm from Chicago, where gutters and downspouts are mandatory. If they ARE putting them all around in the new CYV's, as it appeared to me when we last drove through a new area, it could well be because feedback has shown that more people desire them and they are complying. I know we did speak of gutters to our sales rep and she said we weren't the first people to ask about them. The reps do give feedback to the builder. |

I have a patio on the side of my house and the rain coming off my roof started to make a black line where it hit hit the patio. Installed gutters and no more black line on cement.

Don't forget that you need gutters to install a rain barrel from the downspout. We brought a large one down from Ohio and connected soaker hoses to it. Gives about half of our plantings in the back of our CYV an extra watering sometimes.
