Toooo high, plus TECO will install a new one, take old away, and add about 10 dollars to your monthly gas bill interest free till it’s paid off. Cost for our water heater 3 years ago was 685. Only exception is if you sell your home, as we did, balance becomes payable at settlement. Just another option.

If you have gas, I think the gas company still has the $350 rebate. I picked up a $300 40 gal tank at Lowes, had Tim Herndon install it and take the old one away, and after I got my rebate and paying the plumber, the final total cost was about $175. I also did this on my first house here and for a friend.

Get a recirculating pump instead of a tankless heater. Top of the line is $200 at Amazon and a plumber or handyman can install it for about $100. It will deliver hot water in less than 10 seconds.

Anyone confirm if this is the right ballpark? I guess it's been too long since I had this done. (I was expecting half that price)
I just got a quote from CPM Pluming for $750 for a new 50 gal tank installed.

Figure the cost of the water heater plus a few hours labor and maybe a service call charge.

As Ed pointed out in post 23, unless you are comparing installation prices on the exact same model of water heater, it's a moot point who quoted it.

Good thing you asked or it looks like you may have gotten ripped off. Always good to get 3 quotes for exactly this reason.

Make sure they install properly so you can get a hose on the drain faucet. Ours was cockeyed and inside the drip pan (installed by previous owner) and we couldn’t drain our tank. Called the installer who wasn’t the least concerned about the issue. Wanted to charge $85 to look at it. Will never use them. Hubby cut a notch in the drip pan...free!

Use Teco if that is your gas supplier.

Torri Plumbing did my 40 gal hot water heater recently for $650.00 total after $350 rebate. I have a feeling that the $2000.00 figure from this post is possibly for a Tankless system.

Buy through Lowes. They have approved installers for their tanks. I just replace a gas H/W tank (22 years old) and it was $1300.00 installed. With my gas company rebate and Lowes military discount my final cost was $900.

Have a look at the chart below, which I posted a few weeks ago with a lot of commentary on a thread here on Tankless Water Heaters, along with a lot more info. The most expensive now and the cheapest over a decade by far is an electric heat pump water heater, also available from HD.

Most people never drain their water heater.

The OP said it was a tank.
