Why would you need more than one, let alone three?

Buuuut, I just proved you could.

PS. The rules state you can only have one account. I hope the admin's eventually have the capability of matching up different user names with the same IP address...and boot them ALL.

Especially given that Admin's can probably see...who voted for what.

I assume you're the one that picked '3?'

Husband and wife live together in the same house. If you go by IP address only one could have an account.

Good point.

Another means to find those with multiple user accounts seems to be needed then.

This is a public Bulletin Board. All you need is a valid, at the time you create the account, email address. Anyone in the world can be a member. If someone does get kicked off all they need to do is start again with a different email address. A better and more interesting poll would be how many email accounts do you use.

Tracking by IP address for individual users? I often wonder how these crazy ideas get spread about how the internet works.

Against site rules??

There is software that allows people to be as many different names as they want, and several people have escaped detection on this forum by using it. I know of three posting right now, on this forum, in the last twenty four hours who have gone through two, three, more names. Several because of heated political set-to's and some because they can appear to have more than one person in support of their wacky and extreme and usually mean ideas and attitudes. There are MANY clearly made up names on the other unmentionable online news.

People say, and I must respect their views, that giving up their real identity opens them to identity theft and that is indeed serious. I think that hiding behind a screen name (or several) allows people to say things they never would, or could say to another human in person.

Those are my views.

You have piqued my interest. What software is this?

Detection? Who is looking for them? Why?

Think of this posting philosophy in certain foreign countries where usage of real names might have dire consequences,

Being a mod (not admin) on another site a few years ago... I think I have a pretty good idea of how it all works.

Banning just a user name, allows that person to rejoin with a new user name... with/without a new e-mail address.

Banning by IP address, means that a new user name/e-mail address doesn't matter...and they can't rejoin.

A guide to banning disruptive forum members. | ProBoards

Quote:

2. Type of Ban

For existing bans, this area displays the type of ban assigned to each member. For new bans, there's a drop-down menu providing the following ban options:

IP Address: The IP Address ban prevents members from logging into the discussion forum using devices associated with the banned IP address. When attempting to login, banned members are shown a message letting them know they've been banned. IP addresses display as blocks of numbers separated by periods, for example; 127.0.0.1.

Member IP addresses can be found in their profiles to the right of the Last Known IP header under the Recent Activity section, and in the bottom-right corner of posts they've made.

Username: When assigned a username ban, members attempting to login with that username will receive a message letting them know they've been banned from the message board and will be logged out of their account automatically.

Email Address: Email address bans are best for members with multiple forum accounts using the same email address. Once an email address has been banned, any account using that email address will receive a message letting them know they've been banned and will automatically be logged out of their account. This will occur for all accounts using that same email address.

Like duhbear said above though, an IP ban means that anyone using that IP Address in the house cannot get back on the site...so might not be fair if there's a problem with only one of the household users.
