I am on Facebook but only my friends can see things I post or share. This option is available to anyone through their settings. In addition, my email address is not available to anyone either -- friend or not.

Anyone who wishes to contact me can only do so through Facebook, not directly to me, unless it is someone to whom I've already given my email info.

Some of my family members are on Facebook and find out things other family members post, that are so, private in nature.

Why anyone does that is beyond me but then, I tend to have a healthy respect for my privacy.
I could not agree more.
I value my privacy more than my curiosity to find out about others' stuff.

I am not sure I understand the negative Facebook comments. Realistically, TOTV is Facebook for Villagers.

What you share on either site depends on your level of comfort. Some people don't share a lot on TOTV, just like on Facebook. Some overshare on TOTV, just like on Facebook. Some get in bickering matches on TOTV, just like on Facebook. Some people waste too much time on TOTV, just like on Facebook.

TOTV can be an invaluable asset for someone learning about The Villages. It can also be a place to get your feelings hurt, or bullied, or attacked. Facebook can be an invaluable asset for far-flung families, or for marketing products or services. It can also be a place to get your feelings hurt, or bullied, or attacked.

If you think you have your privacy in this day and time let me tell you that in less than two minutes I know for a fact I can get your address, how much you paid for your house, and display a picture of the front of your house. Given a little while I can find out to whom you are married, to whom you were married, your children's names, and where you went to school. Given a hometown, just a little more time and a little money, a credit report and probably your social security number or credit cards.

You are so RIGHT that I should take your post and frame it or have it tattoed somewhere. (no...forget about the tattoo) Hurt and angry happens a lot to people who allow themselves to get involved in public discussion.

If you see someone's name in print anywhere, you can find out loads about them. An astute person reading a forum like this can make some pretty accurate assumptions about folks too. I sometimes feel so sorry for a posters spouse. I know plenty feel sorry for Sweetie.

Most of the time I could just hug people after reading their posts for awhile. AND I know that some posters sound very direct and offensive on this forum but are not when you meet them.

You're right about the oversharing. I've seen people post their home address on TOTV then announce to the world they are going on vacation or back up north somewhere for a designated period of time. Might as well take an ad out in the Daily Sun and say "here is where I live and I'll be gone for two weeks, come and rob me".

I can understand how interesting it must be to talk with today's students about privacy issues. I used to tell kids that the internet is the world -- and all that entails.
You should have seen the looks on their faces when I described what a party line was when we were younger.
They have no clue what personal privacy means. Their biggest concern is whether their parents "go through" their phones and messages.

I am into Facebook heavily now because it offers a lot more control over what stays and what goes than various other sites.

There are a lot of problems though. For instance, last month I got an Instant Message of someone claiming to be a Facebook employee who wanted to be my friend. I said yes wondering why Facebook would have an employee doing this. She-- a very attractive avatar showed up-- then asked me various questions about how my family is doing. I thought a very odd concern of any employee on Facebook.

The next day she started telling me that Facebook has a lottery and I had won $600,000. I say "Wow" via the message board and ask for details.

These are scant.

She asks me how I want the money giving me three choices of bank draft, check or wire transfer. I say check not wanting to give her any financial information.

She comes back after I alert Facebook of this exchange through the suspicious activity link that I will need to come personally to the Facebook office-- in Menlo Park, CA-- to get the check. OK. I Google the name she has been using and up pop the NIGERIANS!

I forget the name she was using but it was one of hundreds the Nigerians use in their various internet scams.

My older brother got the same friend request from a Facebook employee but said "no"!

Default tomwed shared a gem on another thread

When I first saw the name of the thread... I immediately thought of tomwed's comment about privacy!

If I sit on my lanai and sneeze I don't want 5 neighbors saying, "God Bless You".

Off topic but in keeping with the title of the thread

Some people think the screens on their lanais are one way -- they can see out but we can't see in. Hoo boy, I have seen some sights on my morning walks. There are some things you just can't unsee, LOL.

One day when I'm feeling frisky I may fall to the ground with my hands over my face yelling, "Oh, oh, my eyes are burning!"

Once you post or up load picture it's out there for sites to sell or use as they wish. Just like radio shack use to umpteen years ago. Rango said it once you upload you lost control or some cases just click on site? How do you think Zebrook made all those millions? Could it be selling personnel information gathered on Facebook? Everybody uses Facebook to gather personnel information even though we think we have it blocked. Nothing for free.

Most of use find this out too late. How many of use have posted pictures on the free sites like snapfish ect... then see these pictures posted elsewhere, so again everything you post or upload not free somebody somewhere making money our using your information to make money. When you click on site looking for something spyware gathers it and sells it so now you get all these popups, how do you think they know what you were just shopping for?

"Hey! You! Get Off Of My Cloud" takes on a whole new meaning for us ol' boomers, doesn't it.

I know some people here view it with suspicion, but it's why some member prefer to keep their real names and identities anonymous. (Although of course the moderators know all.)

There are many jobs now in marketing and social media where applicants must provide links to demonstrate their personal online presence and mastery of same. As a fuddy duddy, it's kind of shocking to me that people would be willing to share that -- it's not just their own info, it's everyone they talk to and those people talk to ...
Back when Facebook was new my husbands security classes told them not to join it as it would affect their government clearance. I don't know if they have changed their stance on that to keep up with the times but that is what they said then. As a high clearance was helpful in getting good jobs in the industry neither one of us ever joined and since retirement last year haven't yet. However friends think we are nuts not to join in,
