Default Insurance on golf carts

I have read a lot about golf carts going faster than 20 MPH. Must golf cart insurance policies state "......coverage will not apply if the vehicle ....."should be registered....in the state it is operated. " Therefore...if that wording is in your policy....and your cart goes faster than 20-25 MPH....there is a question as to whether you have insurance coverage; if the golf cart is just subject to registration. Remember it does not have to be registered.....but.....subject to registration (per your insurance policy).

I think you are conflating two issues; 1. Speed is a legal issue 2. Insurance coverage for someone impacted by an accident. It is incumbent upon the police to determine if speed caused any accident and, if so, the insurance company has the discretion to refuse coverage if the insured does not have Clean hands.

In Florida, a golf cart is defined as not being capable of exceeding 20mph. This vehicle does not need registration. Insurance companies recognize this type of vehicle.

If the golf-cart-like vehicle is capable of exceeding 20mph but is not capable of exceeding 25mph then it is defined as a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV). By Florida law, these must be registered and I believe that registration requires proof of insurance. There are insurance companies that have policies to cover these vehicles.

Confirmation bias is real; I can find any number of articles that say so.

You can also get golf cart insurance on a normal golf cart that goes up to 20mph. We have that on both of our golf carts.

That’s correct, all three of our carts are governed at 20 mph and are insured. We don’t necessarily insure them because of the value of the carts, but rather for liability protection.

For those not aware, Sumter County Sheriffs do not issue speeding violations for golf carts. They cite a Criminal Infraction for driving a golf cart capable of exceeding 20 mph.

Additionally, they issue citations for “failure to register a motor vehicle,” which requires the individual to appear before a judge.

...

Dear Golf Cart Operator:
Florida Statute 320.01 defines a golf cart as a vehicle which is NOT CAPABLE of exceeding twenty (20) miles per hour.

If your cart is capable of exceeding twenty (20) miles per hour then it is NOT a golf cart and as such requires full compliance with a Florida Driver's License, registration (tag) and motor vehicle insurance plus all safety equipment required for a motor vehicle to operate on a public roadway.
