Default Flying insects in Amelia

Accckkkk!!!! Our houses in this area of Amelia are being swarmed by flying insects. They look kind of like mosquitoes, but they do not sting. They like to hang out on the window screens, also up by the gutters, and then get caught in the spiderwebs. There are literally 1000s of them - and that's probably an under-estimate! They're multiplying in the cul de sac roundabout's plants and if you are real quiet, you can hear them buzzing while they fly.

Does anyone else have these annoying insects?

Does The Villages have a truck that comes around to spray anymore? I know last year they sprayed for mosquitoes, as I saw/heard them come around in the early morning hours. But I haven't seen that truck at all this year...

Any suggestions as to who to call? This is not just limited to my house, but effects the whole neighborhood, so for me to call my bug man would seem like throwing $$ into the wind.

Yes the Villages is still spraying. We are in Polo Ridge and the noisy spraying truck has been around several times this year. At first I thought maybe the bugs might be "love bugs" as this is Sept but I"m not aware of them making any noises when flying. Sorry I can't help with what they may be. If the little critters are in your yard call your pest service...shouldn't be an extra charge...at least ours isn't if I call for extra assistance. Good luck

I bet your pest service will know what they are. Whether the service will help you may depend on your contract.

Yes, Krash, we have them too in Hadley but mostly on my street which backs up to a pond. They are completely out of control this year and I haven't seen the villages spraying at all. My neighbors and I are trying to talk to the village maintenance dept to see if they can spray the pond cause we're sure they are breeding there. They are blind mosquitos, and they do not bite. I called Massey, Dean, and another exterminator and they all agree, if they spray it will be useless, it is coming from the pond. My neighbors have been completely frustrated for the past month trying to get them under control. Maybe we should merge with your area and have a louder voice with TV? Apparently the season for them ends in Nov. I'm can't wait that long, its driving me nuts (nuttier)....

Kathie- We also back up to a pond, so that's probably the source. Ya know, I haven't really heard any frogs lately... and we definitely DON'T have any frogs in the streets like we had last year. I remember when it would rain, the streets would be full of frogs & toads, and you would see carcasses of them lying in the roadways, as they would get run over by carts & cars - it was like an amphibian massacre. And my dogs thought they were at a buffet - I would have to watch them like a hawk to make sure they didn't eat any of them!

Perhaps the frogs' demise has caused this swarming to occur? I certainly don't like this particular change to the ecosystem!

I would love to join forces with you in trying to remedy this problem - My neighbors can get pretty vocal too! Who did you call or speak to?

If Massy, Dean & others say spraying would be useless....what are you expecting TV to do?
BTW the lovebugs should be showing up any day now, maybe they will fall in love with the blind mosquitos and elope to Mexico.

You're right Bogie, we're not sure exactly what they can do but we're in a desperate situation here. I think I would try anything short of spraying all around the house myself every day until I can go outside. OMG, I forgot about the lovebugs, maybe this year, I'll love them too, if they eat these things. Thanks for the morning giggle.

Have you tried calling the Sumter Co. Extension Office? I have found them to be so helpful with a variety of questions. It does appear that the ponds, without frogs, are the larger eco-issue. Blind mosquitos - who knew?

LOL...that's hilarious.

FYI: The love bugs are on the way! They arrived here in NW Florida two days ago...swarming and doin' their thing all over the place. At least it doesn't last forever!
