Default Leaking toilet

We live in Lake Deaton and purchased our begonia in July 2015.
In the last few months the toilet will start running to raise the water level. Obviously there is a slow leak but my husband doesn't see it.
Has anyone else had this issue? Any ideas? My husband says the ballcock is unlike any he has seen before.

At the bottom of the big black cylinder there is a gasket go to Home Depot & buy the gasket, then go to youtube & you'll see how to install very easy less than 3 minutes to fix--DO NOT put any bleach tabs in tank

Wow, this is a conundrum. We did start using bleach tabs because we were getting what looked like black mold in the tank and around the inside of the bowl. The bleach tab handles thhat .....what would you use instead?

I don't know what brand or type of parts are installed? but IMO only two ways water can migrate to the bowl from the tank. One down the overflow tube which means the float is adjusted too high or shut off valve leaking? the other would be the flapper at the bottom of the tank leaking. So. if water is flowing down the overflow (you can see this when you lift cover off top of the tank water will be running down the overflow tube) its float or valve leaking problem. When you look in the tank if the water level is two inches below the overflow tube and close to the water level line on the tank, then it the Flapper gotten hard and not sealing which makes the valve open and close periodically, which you will hear the toilet run and rhythmic time table. I doubt its the tank seal that the flapper seal on IMO. When I have this problem it's usually the Flapper. I just buy new flapper and install it.

There are two common ways a toilet can leak. The gasket (or flapper) at the bottom of the tank is the most common cause. However, if replacing it doesn't work, then you may have a leak in the fill valve, which will cause the water in the tank to rise above the overflow level and dump water into the overflow pipe. Sometimes, the fill valve will seem to work, but an hour or so after flushing, a slow leak in the fill valve will allow water to dump into the overflow. I would not put any chemicals in the toilet tank, only in the bowl.

You can also get these at ACE hardware stores. The large black tube will come out, and you will find 3inch (or so) gasket at the bottom, remove the old one and install the new one.

if it's a Kohler toilet with a canister, sometimes the canister will rotate and cause the chain to tighten and slightly lift the canister off of its seat. Make sure chain isn't kinked or twisted.

The gasket some are talking about is the flapper. the flapper is the seal. there also is base seal that the flapper seals against. again if water Not running down the overflow it 99.9999% it's the flapper (or Big Black or red Gasket as some call it). Very easy to change in about 20 seconds. Now it its running down the overflow tube either the float out of adjustment or the FILL VALVE won't seal when the Float arm puts enough pressure on it to close it. That takes about 15 to 30 mins. to change with some common knowledge of hand tools.

common toilet parts - Google Search

again it this the type of plumbing hardware installed?

Like already stated, if you have the cylinder unit the sealing gasket is leaking by or their is debris on it. Ours got a piece of bleach tablet stuck in it once. U-tube has very good video on how to replace gasket, easy but buy the quality seal.

If your toilet looks like the inside of the one in this YouTube video, it's a real easy job to replace. (Except where he turns the plastic part at 42 seconds) It turns hard and you think you're going to break it. Also for those that are unfamiliar with the cheap plastic water shutoff valve. You turn the water off by pulling straight out.

Kohler K-GP1059291 Canister Flush Valve Seal

$6.99 at Amazon and about the same price at hardware stores. Make sure you get the yellow one made of better material than the original red one.
