I think men do this in golf carts because of the length of their legs relative to the distance from the seat to the floor. There is not enough room for the leg to fit straight down without lifting the thigh off the seat and putting pressure on the back of the butt. This becomes uncomfortable in a golf cart because of the harsh suspension. Allowing the leg to extend outward takes a longer route to the floor, thus allowing the butt and thigh to rest properly on the seat, thus providing better distributed support. Women don't usually have this problem because of the shorter leg length.

I've seen this too driving around TV.
Tough enough passing a semi on the turnpike and your car is 3' from that rig...one false move and...
Same and perhaps worse passing a golf cart, most times 2' or so away...one wrong move by either vehicle and...

The margin for error in a golf cart is so tight. Wrong flick of the steering wheel and up the curb to the right or into a car's path on the left. We all know that, but some folks seem to drive as if they are a 9-life cat. Most cart drivers (including me I hope) are courteous and careful.

I have been seeing more and more cart drivers looking at their smartphone while on the go - THAT'S more troubling than the leggy-guys...

Safety

Only guys seem concerned with this. We girls always thought it was an anatomy thing. Usually only guys with big feet do it...................

EVER. I am not too smart but I have a good memory.
I have heard of people getting hurt doing this. There was a post of TOTV a number of years ago about it. It might be from 2008 or 2009?

The other thing I cringe at is when the passenger has his hand on the roof of the cart and the cart turns into a tunnel. I see all the scrapes on the tunnel wall and can only imagine what that would do to your arm or hand.

When we moved here, we attended the Newcomer's informational meeting. There, in speaking to golfcart safety we were told to keep our feet/legs inside the carts as TOO MANY have had serious injuries in their dangling their legs out. But as with other safety issues here (ie. driving cars, round abouts etc etc etc) folks won't listen I'm sure.

I have worked in the Environmental, Health and Safety department for a major chemical company for 26 years (not including 7 years in R&D) and we would refer to this situation as a "line of fire". While there is no guarantee that someone will get hurt by being in the "line of fire", their chances increase when they do. Most people don't recognize the hazard, or they don't believe it will happen to them, which is what we almost always hear during the resulting accident/incident investigation. IMHO, the best teacher is experience, not common sense since we all see questionable behaviors just about every day no matter where you live, and yet "it won't happen to me" seems to "live on". Another poster mentioned the Darwin Award and unfortunately, there will certainly be a plethora of examples yet to come that would qualify.

Darwin's theory will take care of this. Sooner or later they learn the hard way.

I drive my cart as I do an automobile, with full awareness of where everyone is around me and the thought that there's someone who might suddenly do something stupid and to try and hit me.

When I see someone coming at me with their leg splayed out, I stay safely in my lane but don't worry too much about what happens if they stray into my lane and their leg gets mangled.

If they don't understand the danger and consequences of their actions, it certainly isn't up to me to try and teach them anything at this stage in life.

I drive my truck with both arms out the window, steering with my knees. Now I guess someone is going to gripe about that!

I directed this toward men because I never see women doing that.
And sometimes when meeting a cart the view is, ummm, "interesting"

Everything can change in an instant. Even today, in a social media driven world, I'm pretty sure there are things we miss everyday that would make me us cringe or maybe even wonder how some ever get out of bed by themselves.

I'm not a fan of going over the bridge from Lake Sumter up to Spanish Springs. But it's even more fun when the guys have their knee hanging out you're so close because the path is so narrow it's just stupid to take the risk. But I'm sure there are some Orthopods Out there that's making money off of those who choose to do so.
