Default Ice Maker Stopped Working

Hello Villagers!!

I have a CYV with the standard issued GE refrigerator that came with the villa when we bought it. It is 6 years old and the ice maker stopped working. I adjusted the temp setting to "4" as stated in the manual. The manual stated that the ice maker will stop working if the setting is under 4.

Well, it has been 48 hours and no ice.

Wonder if anyone had a similar experience and what did you check first to try and fix.

Can you also recommend a reputable appliance repair service.

Thanks

We just used Becks Appliance Repair (352-245-3598) for our Whirlpool refrigerator. We were pleased with our service.

I had that happen several times, I have the same fridge.

Check to see if the area next to where the water enters the tray is frozen. There is a small hose entering a pan area in back of the ice tray. It about 1/2 inch by 1 inch. That is where my problem was. It was frozen. Stick your finger in there and if it is frozen what I did was to get a hair dryer and melt the frozen area. It could take ten minutes or so but once it was melted, I removed the Now smaller piece of ice and the water flowed freely and we had ice again.

This could be a somewhat unorthodox method but it worked for me three times whe I returned after the summer.

Alan Beck is your best choice. He's a great troubleshooter. It's a pleasure to watch him work. He's a true appliance repair professional.

Turn on the light and leave it on for several days. If it's frozen up, this will unfreeze it. Mine did it all the time.

Defrosting the built-up ice in a freezer is only part of the solution. The other part involves flushing any mold from the drainage tubing from the freezer to the evaporator tray underneath the fridge which caused the water backup and freezing to occur. Alan Beck uses a steam cleaner for this purpose. Of course you could do it yourself with the right equipment and knowledge.

Rick Beck good choice for repair. But change water filter first, may be your problem.

Thank you everyone who responded with your suggestions. Will try the hair dryer solution first and hope it works. If not, then it looks like a call to Rick Beck who has had great reviews here!!

make sure the water supply tube has not frozen shut.
if so use a hair dyer on the plastic tube and the ice will come out allowing water to fill the ice tray.

We have had no ice in our rather new LG refrigerator since April! It is only 1 year old but the warranty had expired. I called 2 Brothers Appliance after referrals on this site. He worked on it for 3 months telling us he was the "ice maker whisperer"! After we spent $500, he admitted he couldn't fix it. Just don't call 2 Brothers!!

My Amana ice maker recently stopped producing ice so I used a hair dryer on it for about 5 minutes. Did the trick.
