Here's the problem:

Your alarm system goes off.
The robber knows he only has a couple of minutes.
The security system calls you after a couple of minutes and you, the owner, don't respond.
The security company calls the police.
By the time the police get to your house, the "baddies" are gone.

Just like the manned gates we have, don't let an alarm system give you a false sense of security.
If you're lucky, the actual alarm will scare the bad guys off -- before they have a chance to rob you.

We have received much information on the location of the burglary, point of entry, what was stolen, etc but the most important issue or circumstance is neither known or discussed.

These are all crimes of opportunity that is the burglars lay in wait until residents leave. However why has resident X been targeted and not his next door neighbor. did the burglar gain entrance legally and have an opportunity to asses a residents assets? I do not wish to cast a shadow on anyone but given our geographical location contractors, vendors etc may be hard pressed for employees and not doing a good job of vetting who they are hiring. Conversely we do live adjacent to towns alleged to have a large drug user population and these users have only one thought in mind more dough to get more dope. If this is true and that is the explanation then perhaps law enforcement ought to bear down heavily for arrests and courts ought to give out longer sentences.

As one poster said in another thread on this subject matter one day it is going to end very badly for someone

Default Real problem area

Where?

West Palm Beach - population 102,422
Burglaries - 1,289
Property crimes - 5,404
Murders - 17
Rapes - 31

The Villages - 100,000 +
Burglaries 9-10 ??? past 6 months
Property crimes - 395
Murders - ???
Rapes - ???

Stats taken from internet crime reports and indexes on various sites. Crimes against property and people should never be accepted merely as a statistic or taken lightly, nor, should they be exaggerated in a public forum to cause unwarranted alarm. Context is everything.

Having been the victim of a crime I'm always vigilent about my security. We never leave our home unsecured and have all the appropirate locks suggested by law enforcement. An alarm system is just another layer. It will let me know if someone has breached the security system while out or during the night when we're home. Two scenarios that occurred here in TV. That said I still feel TV is a safe place to live and enjoy a relaxed lifestyle knowing that I've done all I could to secure my home and person. I don't take my security for granted.

There is no question that the more security measures you undertake the more you frustrate break-ins. However, it is not and does not ensure your safety. Many posters point to the fact that relative to other areas The Villages is safe. This is true and it does mean something. However if you are the victim or located in the approximate vicinity of the victim he does give you reason to pause and be concerned

I would welcome a stop and frisk policy here in The Villages. I also believe that some posters may well object. However given the white parked car scenario previously mentioned in relation to these break-ins do you suppose a police officer under a policy of stop and frisk would be more efficient than say a resident flashing pictures at everything he or she sees as questionable

I would vote for stop and frisk among those who look "frisky". I guess that would be profiling younger people in scruffy cars and someone is gonna get their knickers in a hitch over that.

I would be glad to help. I have always wanted to pull the pants down on the kids who walk around with their crotch at their knees.

Bad Gracie.

Hi GG "racial profiling has always been a red herring. Recall how those wiseguys in New York, Chicago Philly etc used that same tactic. If you have an ethnic group that's a mafia, cartel terrorist cell wouldn't you focus on that ethnic group I mean where there is smoke there is fire. LOE guys are pretty proficient in knowing which of that ethnic group is likely suspect within that ethnic group because many have a long history of being persons of interest and or having relationship with know thugs. Is it perfect no but to suggest that unless you can be 100% positive is a statement that goes against nature itself. To error is to be human

Where the problem areas?

I think we all need to heed law enforcements recommendations with a HUGE helping of common sense and much of the problem will be solved.

And then switch subjects for a while?

By the numbers we are all confronted by much more danger on the streets and on the cart paths every day we get behind the wheel or walk on the multi modal paths.

So why doesn't the bigger problem and more prevelent danger get as much play?

The only place with 100,000 or more people that has less crime than The Villages would be heaven. It is hard for me to believe that someone actually moved here and thought that there was absolutely no crime in The Villages.
