Replacing sod in small sections is an easy DIY, and you may be able to do it on the cheap. Look around your neighborhood for someone having landscape work done. If they are removing sod to do the landscaping, the contractor will likely give you what you need, instead of hauling it to a landfill.

The first question is why does the sod need to be replaced. If, something killed it you need to correct the problem. Things such as too much shade. Improper watering, poor drainage, people walking on it etc, etc etc etc

All true , easy project, I use the weed eater to chop up the bald space a bit, and then yes, I see a lot of pools going in this summer and odds are you can get pieces of sod free ... we usually purchase some Black Cow and actually sprinkle it right over the top of the new sod pieces... don't even water it in if rain is expected. Our spots have mostly been grub activity, so we spray area before repairing. Sadly, many fungus diseases are carried from one customer to another via the lawn mowing "services" ! Told by U. of Florida ag. agent that "time is money" and although the university has tried for years to offer free classes for lawn service owners and employees, on how to prepare a cheap, effective, disinfectant they can easily spray on the mower blades after each appointment... they said that they have never been able to get any interest or cooperation from them to control the spread of fungus !

You detail one of the reasons, for at least as long as I can, I will mow my own grass vs the numerous hack and go lawn services that propagate all over the Villages. My neighbor's service was coming once a week for awhile. It has been a week and 1/2 now, and with the hurricane, don't expect to see them until next week at the soonest.

And Lake Gem in Tavares will sell you individual pieces of sod. I went that route with a patch of my yard that just didn't seem to want to grow. Sort of looks better now...

dog urine is my problem. it's bright green & full in most places, but you can always tell where the dog has been, lol. it's the joy of owning pets!

I did a section along our driveway, about 30 feet long, and 2 feet wide. My neighbor had picked up 4 or 5 18" by 18" squares of sod, which I cut into quarters, and then placed at intervals in the "dead" area. I watered every day for a month, and walked on these pieces to make sure they were in good contact with the ground. By the end on the month, I had a partial lawn, and several weeks later a full lawn. Further the initial cost of around $20 saved me well over $1000 that were in the area of the 2 quotes I got from lawn scaping companies. It took about 2 hours for the initial planting, and 15 to 20 minutes each day for watering.

You can buy rectangular pieces of sod at Lowels for a good price. They also sell plugs but they are rather expensive, it’s better to just rip apart the rectangular pieces of sod into little pieces and you have economical plugs. If you plant the plugs spaced apart by a couple inches they will spread and fill in rather quickly. It’s an easy job for small areas and there is still at least a couple months of growing season before it gets too cold for them to take. Good luck.
