Default Microwave venting

We bought a new Villa in the Brownwood area and previously owned a villa in the Lake Sumter area. In both villas the microwave was not vented to the outside. Both microwave fans blew cooking exhaust into the living area which made no sense to me. In our Brownwood villa, the microwave was on an outside wall. I contracted with Jim Bader 352-406-0952 to vent it. He cored through my pored concrete wall and installed a very modest looking vent. It works great. He also gave me the option to vent up through the roof but going through the wall was less work and I wasn't eager to put another vent through my roof.

We use a Vornado fan in the corner of our kitchen/dining area and it keeps the kitchen very cool when we're cooking.

Although our ceiling fan in the kitchen is not as neat as "under55", it is certainly a lifesaver.

We paid extra to have a wall oven. Boy was that a mistake. That sucker is vented directly into the kitchen and the cabinet below the oven through an opening under the door. The kitchen heats up like crazy if I use the oven. After the first big family holiday meal here we had a ceiling fan instaled and it is worth it's weight in gold!

Don't hesitate. It will be one of the best things you do in your new home! I wouldn't give it up for anything!!

Besides fan size for ceiling fan, the most import feature for fans is pitch of the blades and the # of blades-yes 3 blade fans are way more efficient than 5 blade fans.

Ask your selves the ?, why are the fans in all the rooms which vary way different in size the same diameter-most of the builder line fans supplied in the new homes buy the builder are barely adequate for a guest bedroom--they are totally inadequate, for living rooms, master bedrooms and lanais

Hi Gracie,

If you live in the same house you lived in a few years ago when I did the inspection on the house next door to yours, your microwave should definitely be vented outside. I cannot say for sure since I did not do your home inspection, but in your style home your microwave should be most likely vented through the roof. If by chance your kitchen is on an outside wall, your microwave would be vented outside the wall.

Sometimes I find on these wall vents, the flapper could be stuck shut. This is an easy fix. I HAVE found on a few occasions that the builder did not remove the back or top plate of the microwave and a vented microwave ends up not vented. I also have found a few times that they forgot to vent the microwave outside at all.

On newer homes, the only villages homes NOT vented outside are Courtyard Villas.

To complacate the issue, the builder's choice of microwave does not have a high CFM exhaust. Many complain that when boiling water, etc, the steam does not get pulled into the exhaust, but instead steams up the front on the unit. I was recently in a house where the owner installed an aftermarket hood that extended in front of the unit, catching all of the exhaust.

LG makes a microwave that has the bottom portion slide out to catch all of the steam, etc. This is what my wife made me buy for her kitchen.

Gracie, unless you are now in a Villa, your microwave should vent outside. I would have this checked.

Hope that helps! Frank D.
