Used to love some of those shows back in the day. The "theater of the mind" is sometimes more vivid than an actual movie screen. Before our first TV "The Lone Ranger" was a family favorite. Used to listen to something called "Suspense Theater" or something like, tuning it in on my transistor radio and earphone after going to bed. Led to some pretty interesting dreams!

What does the club do? Is it a listening party or a discussion meeting?

I''ve listened to OTR all my life as my father played us the cassettes and his reel to reel in the 70's. I collected for about 20 years and have thousands of American, British, and South African shows. Even have a few transcription discs.

Youtube has been a great resource as many rare shows have been uploaded, plus the transcription discs are rotting away in University archives. New technology has allowed them to be cleaned up so some of them sound like were recorded yesterday (The Shadow, Suspense, X-Minus One).

My all time favorite was The Shadow, but another favorite is I Love a Mystery, of which very few survived.

On YouTube search for Great Detectives of old time radio.
You can also listen on Spotify, I believe you can search for the same thing there, and listen for free.

I don’t know if this still exists, but it used to be possible to buy DVD collections of Old Time Radio shows for remarkably small prices. I used to be able to listen to them in my car, but now I have to hook up a player to my computer to listen, and I never seem to do it. Thirty years ago I bought some cassette tape collections of OTR shows at Sam’s Club, and my children and I used to listen to them for several hours in the car every Sunday. Now the youngest is 35 and the oldest is 40. There aren’t many people of that age group who know what I’m talking about when I mention “The Great Gildersleeve” or “The Aldrich Family” or “Fibber McGee and Molly” or “Lur Miss Brooks” or fondly remember the endless advertisements for J-E-L-L-O. Happy memories!

By the way, last time I checked, the information about the Old Time Radio Club here (Talk of the Villages/Entertainment/Clubs) was almost entirely out of date and should be revised. People go at that time and place and find nothing. People send a message, and the contact isn’t even alive anymore. This is common on that Clubs section. It’s not being updated.

The OTR club info on TOTV club page has correct information. You can also go to the club's website: thevillagesoldtimeradio.club/ which has a comment section if you have questions.

Mea culpa. When I moved here five years ago it was wrong, and I had a hard time finding out who was in charge, and when I finally got in touch, I found that they weren’t meeting in the summers because of the flight of the snowbirds. Of course, at that time, no clubs were meeting! (Hard times!) When things opened up, I got involved with music and never checked out the OTR Club. But I do love the genre.

The 5 part Johnny Dollar episodes with Bob Bailey are considered to be one of the best runs ever done on OTR. The 30 minute ones are ok, and the actor prior to Bob is pretty good (Edmund O'Brien), but unfortunately nothing comes close to this series except the Paul Temple series by the BBC.

Fortunately, most of them survive.

Johnny Dollar and Suspense were the two very last shows of OTR ever broadcast.

When I was in England I use listen to BBC radio commentary on Wimbledon tennis beings I was working sometimes 12 hours day during Wimbledon. I think I’ve some matches recorded on cassette somewhere? I did have quarter finals tickets but was unable to attend due to TDY, I did make Queue one year early rounds.

Default Excellent Old Time Radio Resource -- www.otrr.org/

An excellent resource for Old-Time Radio is Old-Time Radio Researchers (404 Not Found especially, the library OTRR Library (Old Time Radio Researchers) where 60,000 old-time radio episodes are available free to listen to and download. The URL for OTRR is Old Time Radio Researchers (Old Time Radio Researchers) which should not be 404 Not Found.
