There are many, many pergolas all around. I think most require they be attached to the house but I have seen a couple of freestanding ones. Guess it depends on your restrictions. It does have to be approved by ARC.

I have one attached to the side of my house which is on a corner lot that leaves it exposed to the public. Have placed furniture, hung flowers, plantd jasmine to grow up the two main poles (attached to house on other end.) A winding paver walkway leads from our lanai door to the pergola, also pavers on it. Pergola built by Pergola Kings and landscaping and pavers by Villages Palms. Only have one picture and this is where I was installing irrigation for hanging plants, but you can get the idea. Send me a pm and I'll give you my address and you can stop by to see. Hope the photo shows up, I just uploaded it and no evidence that it is there..... edited it and no photo so you'll just have to come by, sorry.

Just built one.
ARC must approve and you need a building permit. Pergola must be attached to your house a arbor / arbour or gazebo is not attached to your house. The Villages has rules about the size of structures not attached to your house. Email me...I'll accept and give you additional info if you desire. |

I just built a free standing pergola last fall. You need to have ARB permission but you DO NOT need a building permit if it is less than 200 Sq. Ft. and you live in Sumter County. Anything larger, you need to get a building permit from the county. You can check out the requirements and get a list of them at the ARB office near the Laurel Manor Rec. Center.

Pergolas are allowed on the side and back of your home providing you have sufficient space and you are not encroaching on a setback. It must also be attached. Pergolas are not allowed in the front or within the setback.

Unless rules have just changed, the ARB approved my free standing pergola last fall. I would check with them and follow their requirements.
