Here's one place from goggle not to use Vaseline:
Do not use petroleum jelly with condoms—it can break down the condom so it gets holes in it.

I doubt your plumber used the Vaseline we are all familiar with. He used a plumbers grease, maybe it was in a Vaseline jar. But, it was plumbers grease, consists mainly of silicon.
