I also have a problem with my St. Augustine grass. Some kind of fungus ate through it front and back yards not sure how many sq, ft. Not happy, I am a snow bird so I was not happy seeing pictures of my fungus infected grass. I use MASSY Services for lawn cutting. I called MASSEY to go out and inspect the lawn for any issues. They reported back to me about the fungus. They treated the lawn for the fungus and now I am waiting for Plugs to be planted. No seed available St. Augustine grass just plugs.

To explain. First of all, I do not work for any of the lawn companies. A lawn, it is not natural. In nature you will never see one plant or neatly edged. So you/we are fighting nature. You blink and nature will beat you.

We are in our rainy season. Not sure but I think we've had more rain and more frequent rain than last year so it is wet. Fungus is always there waiting to damage your lawn.
All is a balance. Too much fertilizer produces new growth and is an invite for fungus to expand.

Why plugs? While you can buy St Augustine seed, it is not the same hybrid that is used for lawns around here. Plugs, pieces of sod, will be or should be the same variety. First step is to kill the fungus. You may well have insect damage as well.

Plugs are less costly. They will grow together. More plugs per sq foot and they will grow together faster. Sod, laying down grass like carpet will be instant. No mater what, freshly planted plugs or sod as there is limited roots needs to be regularly watered.

My deal with my lawn. I do not need to have the best lawn in my neighborhood. I only demand good enough and I only want to spend minimum money and minimum labor.
This year my lawn is pretty darn good.

I treated my lawn with fungicide 5 times so far this year to control it and insecticide 4 times and it looks pretty good. If you aren't here in the summer you should have a contract with someone that offers a guarantee.
