Trying to find .22 ammo about 2012 to 2015 was the same way, either very expensive or in most cases it just wasn't available. I bought a Smith & Weson MP 15/22 in 2012 pictured below. I bought a box of 500 Federal .22 rounds at Walmart for $20. Then in Dec 2012 was terrible school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut.

In 2013 I went to all 3 Walmarts in the area and .22s weren't priced high, they just didn't have any and it was like that for about 3 to 5 years or more. I joined the Smith & Wesson message board and this was happening all around the country. I found through that site places that had it online and ordered ammo through the internet. It's only been a year or two now that you can find it in the stores, and now it about $20 for 325 instead 500 rounds.

Instead of spending money on ammo or going to the range, I ended up customizing my rifle. Kind of overdid for a 22, but it looks cool.

Anyone that doesn't already have a good supply of ammo either shoots way too much or is a p-poor planner.

Nice satire... it’s all about supply and demand. Many times it’s very temporary and just a matter of getting it from the manufacturer to the customer through the wholesale distribution system. Or in the case of gasoline getting the product through the pipelines to the refineries to the customers. Most shortages are temporary and this one is no different.

7 million new gun owners in 2020. That is part of the reason for ammo shortage. Another factor is Covid 19; this disrupted the manufacturing supply chain. I don't see ammo prices or availablity issues being resolved for "awhile".

I have seen no increase in price or reduction in supply of arrows for longbows or compound bows. I don't use a crossbow so I haven't checked for bolts but I imagine those are "business as usual."

The price for river rocks (used in slingshots) is still low, and small stones (bigger than river rocks) for slings are still free from your back yard.

We're starting to go through all our stuff and getting rid of what we don't want to move to Florida. Yesterday I just happened to come across a Barnett crossbow. Want me to bring it with us for you? It even still has 3 bolts in the quiver.

Thanks! Here is the right side, besides the scope and the laser, I had a red dot sight mounted cantilever style. You can also see the light under the front, there was two pressure pads on the left side held on by velcro, one for the light and one for laser. Also had the quick detachable sling and on the stock an ammo pouch for one magazine. I think I added every option I could find. There is a tripod which is removed in the top photo and then goes on easily in the bottom photo, you can see the flashlight better in the bottom photo.

The tripod looks good. Looks like you might have added a suppressor. Was your barrel threaded for a suppressor and did you add one? Great choice of optics too. Have you fired it in this configuration? Curious what brands of accessories you used.

Gun ownership in America, in three charts — Quartz

Three percent of the population own half of the civilian guns in the US. It stands to reason, that they're the ones buying most of the ammo also.
