Why do you need separate accounts if you are married?

In my opinion, you need at least three accounts: his, hers, and a joint account.

You’re correct we don’t know the amount but then the teller should have spoken to a supervisor. He didn’t say the teller did that and made the decision on her/his own. I’m thinking it was a new teller who doesn’t know full banking rules.

for "cash", at the same bank and I had her ID along.

We don't want or own debit cards for many reasons.

I went to the teller, she said: " They can't cash the check because my wife wasn't present."
Even though I had my ID along, the head of the household and had my checking account at the same bank.

Must be "Homeland Security" at work.
Get Cash from your checking /savings account for your wife and she can then Zelle the money back into your account .. easy pezzy
I do this for hubby all the time

Depositing a check and the bank placing a hold on those funds until cleared is smart, not holding the customer “hostage.” If I write a check to you, your bank doesn’t know if my check will clear or not.

Regarding the check payable to cash, 2 things:
1. The teller was correct in that she could not cash it for you. However, I’m sure she explained that you could simply endorse the back, deposit to your personal account, and make a personal withdrawal, (as long as you have enough in your available balance).
2. The bank doesn’t care what your IRS filing status is when it comes to personal accounts. And, technically you can’t be “head of household” if you are married.
The categories are:
• Married Filing Jointly
• Married Filing Separately
• Qualifying Widow(er)
• Head of Household (MUST have a qualifying dependent)
• Single

Married couples should always have their own accounts. How many folks have had a spouse empty the joint bank account to run off with a new love or gamble it all away?

Since everyone is sharing their favorite banks, I will chime in about PenFed Credit Union. They are really fantastic to do business with. I also like the Apple Credit Card. Though, it doesn't have the best interest rate, I do like the fact that it does not have the card number printed on the card. If you have fraudulent charges, you simply notify Goldman Sachs (issuer) about the fraudulent charges and then generate a new card number. There is no need to cancel your card or wait for a new one to be delivered by your mail carrier. You can even change your card number, just because. I like to generate a one-time card number for use online. To avoid paying interest, I pay the card in full each month. If I ever needed to carry a balance, I would choose another card.

I bet that bank was WF. Lots of problems with them. We are getting out of that bank.
