Angry Quantum Fiber dropping Wifi connection intermittently throughout the day.

I've had Quantum Fiber for my internet for about a year now. During the last couple of months I've noticed the Wifi disconnects at various times throughout the day. I'm located in the village of Lake Deaton, off of Hillsborough Trail.

I've found that it briefly disconnects, which affects certain connected devices. For instance, my Ecobee thermostat loses it's connection to the web, which disables the Ecobee app on my phone. Also, my Windows 11 desktop Yahoo mail reports "No Internet Connection".

Quantum had a technician stop by today and replaced the modem and the main pod. Everything was fine for about 1 hour after he left, then the disconnects started happening again. Very frustrating. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I'm getting to the point where I may have to go back to Spectrum.

Are you using any IPTV streaming box like Apollo TV? If so, go into your Quantum app and under network settings, turn off all of the security settings. We think the router is falsely detecting a threat and shutting down till it goes away.

As I had mentioned, I've had Quantum Fiber since the beginning of 2025. The intermittent dropping of Wifi seems to have started only within the last couple of months, especially evident with my mail service on Win 11 as well as with my Ecobee. Also for many years, I've utilized Roku HDMI sticks and the YouTube TV app. (NO Set Top Boxes), without any issues. If you check the web, you'll find others, across the nation have encountered this same type issue. One person indicated, his issue was resolved by repairing fiber optic lines at a junction root box down the street from his house which evidently was causing the short signal loss.

OK, thanks for the clarification. All I can advise you is to call the tech-support report the problem and after you call a couple of times they’ll investigate further and figure out what’s going on. It seems the only people that were having this problem is in your area so there’s something common going on over there.

WHAT?!! What kind of advice is that?! Disable the security settings if you detect a threat? Do you also recommend putting black tape over the Check Engine or Low Oil lights so you don't have to see them on all the time?

Some newer routers besides the normal firewall, they now have a form of antivirus software running at the router in an attempt to catch any intrusions before they get to your devices.
Most routers don’t have this extra software but the ones that do can falsely trigger the router to stop thinking it’s stopping an attack.

The OP in this case doesn’t have this problem but I needed to ask. The settings I recommend to turn off have nothing to do with the normal firewall security and I’ve seen them cause a problem in the past with some systems.

I shoulda have bought a Buick! Remember that commercial? We stuck with Xfinity, and the wheel of death is not an issue. Everyone around us went for the new shiny object and transitioned to Starlink or Fiber Optics.

Do you remember a poster named dbussone? He and I disliked Xfinity beyond description. At one point, I almost had a stroke in the Lady Lake Store over the way we were being treated. dbussone also experienced a horrendous situation, as I did. He never went back, but I did, and it turned out to be a glorious decision for me. I don't know what my friend did. I lost touch with him. Comcast/Xfinity or whatever their name is this week is the way to go in my opinion. I realize I just jinxed myself.

I just installed a newfangled modem last night, as I do every three years. It went smoothly, and I was done in 15 minutes.

If you call back quantum fiber, tell them that with the replacement of the modem/router, there is a connection issue somewhere, and don't let them tell you anything more about inside the house. . they all start with your house, as they are overly confident with their equipment. . same thing happened with a stock market data supplier I use. . I called him, he said its on my side, I did everything he said, no change, he finally opened his email, to a ton of emails, and then said, "Um, wait, its on my side, try again in 10 minutes"

he hadn't opened his email all morning, it was 10 AM. . overly confident in one's system. . .

stuff happens, the connections are all manually made.

For the last year I have had same intermitant loss of service with Quantum....I live in Village of Dunedin - the same area as OP. I think we all need to contact Quantum and maybe they will get it that there is a problem in the area.

I am in Collier and mine is solid. I know when it was reactivated on Quantum, I subscribed to centurylink back in the tv days, he checked and cleaned the fiber from the drop to the concentrator, which for me is near the Collier mailboxes.

To be technically correct, this is not a wifi issue, it’s an internet issue. The WiFi inside your house if working fine. If you can’t talk to your wifi printer, you can’t change the settings on your ecobee from your phone or tablet, or you can’t stream from your internal server, these are wifi issues.

When you call an ISP, they don’t need to come to your house, they can trace your line to see if they see any issues.

It's like there is an echo in here. My connection since I switched a couple of months ago also drops and I have to reset the modem, but not the pod. My own experimentation narrowed it down to "if I reset the modem, the pod reconnects without a reset" so we decided to switch out the modem. That was yesterday and no outages -- yet.

I was hoping for faster speeds at lower prices when I made the switch, but my confidence has not been high enough to complete the switch, so now I have Comcast and Quantum. Maybe they should merge to form Quancast?

{sigh}

I received 3 text messages from Quantum yesterday starting at 9:54 am stating there was an outage in my area and they are working on it. Second message indicated the issue should be resolved by 12:53 pm. Third message at 12:53 said they were still working on the issue and would update soon as they know more. I have not received any additional messages. I live in Sanibel and did not noticed any issue with the internet yesterday.

The issue with the internet dropping out seems to be confined to a specific area off of Hillsborough trail. I've sold and were at over 60 Quantum installations all over the Villages just this year and none have had any of these problems. I helped two Villagers in the Hillsborough area that I didn't sell or was involved with and both are back on-line without any issues, so far. The symptom is you loose the connection to the internet but the light on the SmartNid is still ON solid green.

One of the problems from what I understand is with the SmartNid that's installed usually in the low voltage cabinet in the garage. Quantum got a run of units that were effected by the heat. Replacement units solved the problem. Some of the low voltage cabinets in the area in question have no vents on the door so when we got very hot weather this summer they cooked in there and although some do not fail right away, eventually they are damaged and fail later on.

As fas as the fiber connections are concerned from your home the fiber terminates at something called a Fiber Shelf which are installed in fiber pedistals you see by the pool or around your Village. Each shelf services 32 customers. Normally when the Quantum tech is called out on a trouble like this they check and clean the fiber connections all the way to the shelf. Occasionally, there is a bad connection that needs to be re-spliced but that's very rare. From the fiber shelf the fiber connection goes to a central office either in Lady Lake or Leesburg depending on which Villager you are in. From there the connection goes to Lumen's nation wide fiber backbone and to their IT infrastructure which connects you to the internet. Basically, at a high level, that's how it works. No modems with fiber.

In the 5 years I've had Quantum in Osceola Hills, we never had any outage longer than a couple of minutes. Yesterday was very unusual but they sent out a text very quickly and eventually resolved the issue. The failure rate of Fiber is way less than cable unless there is an accident or cable cut.

The other reason I've seen the internet drop out is when some customers have their own wifi equipment. To date, I've only seen this with the two Villagers I'm helping who had Eero systems. Not sure why since I have 10's of Villagers I've worked with who have Eero systems and no problems. By switching the Eero system out to the Quantum wifi equipment, so far that seemed to solve the problem in these cases.

There is also a possibility that you can get what we call a "stale internet connection" which can cause the connection to the internet to appear to go away. At a high level, each fiber customer is connected to a server in the Lumen infrastructure and connected to the internet. If this server fails or your port gets "in trouble", you will also get this same symptom. This is sometimes why your system will work fine and then all of a sudden fail and sometimes repeditly.

So all this said, with fiber or cable systems, we expect to get installed relatively easy and the system to stay running without any manual intervention if it's installed properly. Set it and forget it right? The reality is in a vast majority of the cases this is the way it is but there are exceptions and they need to be worked to find out the causes and the solutions.

I think one of the reasons why we are now hearing more about Quantum is because of the large number of people fleeing cable and moving to fiber and streaming. While many can complain or be concerned with fiber, many can also do the same with cable. It's the complexity of the systems, the customers installations and how the customer's are using the internet which can also effect reliability. Before I got Quantum my Spectrum internet would go down periodically and I just had to live with it by re-booting my modem every once in a while.

If you are having problems with Quantum, feel free to reach out to me for help.

If you want to work it on your own, my suggestion is every time your internet drops, and you already had a tech come out to eliminate any problems at your home, call the Quantum call center and make them re-boot the line for you. Eventually, there will be enough calls that engineering will look into it and figure out what's going on. We shouldn't have to do this but this is the way it works and also with the cable companies. Once they see a pattern, they automatically escalate internally and eventually the problem is solved. I know this process works since I used it once.

Hope this all helps.
