Default Dowels

Couldn't go back to sleep, so might as well be doing something. The Sumter Sheriff's Office will come to your home free of charge and let you know some of the things that can help. I had them come to mine. He suggested window locks (cheap & easy to install), a deadbolt and peephole for the door from the laundry room to the garage, peephole for the front door, and locking out the garage door (just gotta remember to switch it back to unlock). He also showed us that having a dowel in the sliding door at the bottom is not enough. The bad guys can simply jimmy the lock and then lift the door out of the track. The trick for that is to insert a dowel into the space just above the door where it just rides up there.....impossible to lift the door out of the track then. Those are just a few of the things we implemented.

Do you know if there is a company that installs these spot lights? Seems like a good idea to me.

Yup, that's better. Some people screw a bolt (or two) at the top of the sliding door (right next to the top track), so it can't be lifted off the bottom track. Better yet you can screw a long sheet metal screw through BOTH doors (where they overlap), locking them together. That's the best but it's a pain when you want to open the doors.

I would guess any electrical contractor would be willing to do it.

I recently extended the back wall of my house which necessitated the replacement of my existing motion lights. I bought new ones at Lowes and electric sub contractor installed them.

Three things bad guys don't like: lights, barking dogs, (especially snarling dogs) and alarms, not necessarily in that order.

We bought ours at Home Depot for $39 and I installed it in ten minutes. If you need them installed I am sure one of the local handymen could do it quickly and for a reasonable price.

I currently have a light inside a birdcage which I'd guess can be replaced with a motion light. This is probably a stupid question, but do you know if a motion light will work inside a birdcage, i.e., will it be activated through screening? Or does it have to be outside?

Default Motion Lights & Sliders

I had motion lights installed about a year ago when we had a burglar scare.
I am in a Courtyard Villa so they don't bother my neighbors - Have one set up in the side yard
and two in the back yard. I used The Villages Electrician

(www.thevillageselectrician.com. 352-572-1427

Also a handyman put a row of screws at the top of each slider so they can't be lifted.
I hate to think of our having a need for security systems here in Paradise!!

Article in Daily Sun today (Sunday) about burglaries along with map showing locations.
Guess that shoots down the naysayers that the developer will not allow this information to be published.

This was sent to me by a friend in Georgia. He has an approach to dealing with criminals who want to hurt you and those you care about . I suppose this is how he would deal with a criminal who broke into his home.

The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense. (waiting for attack)

The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either.. The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental.

1. Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

2. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

3. I carry a gun cause a cop is too heavy.

4. When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away.

5. A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him 'Why do you carry a 45?' The Ranger responded, 'Because they don't make a 46.'

6. The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm. 'Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?'
'No Ma'am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my shotgun.'

7. Beware the man who only has one gun. HE PROBABLY KNOWS HOW TO USE IT!!!

But wait, there's more!

I was once asked by a lady visiting if I had a gun in the house. I said I did.
She said 'Well I certainly hope it isn't loaded!'
To which I said, of course it is loaded, can't work without bullets!'
She then asked, 'Are you that afraid of someone evil coming into your house?'
My reply was, 'No not at all. I am not afraid of the house catching fire either, but I have fire extinguishers around, and they are all loaded too.' To which I'll add, having a gun in the house that isn't loaded is like having a car in the garage without gas in the tank.

Once again, I can't find the article online. Is there a way someone could post the article from The Daily Sun, online? I would really like to see the map of where the robberies have taken place.

We are not in TV now. I would buy a paper if we were there.

The sensor will work through the screening but it could have an effect on the range that it can cover if you put it inside a birdcage. We have a lanai and also a large birdcage and putting the sensor by the inside doors would not work at all. Too many obstructions would lead to someone getting very close to the doors. That is why we put ours above the screen door of the birdcage, plus that is where we take the dogs out. (Having said all that it certainly would not hurt having two motion sensor lights).

Starfly, I don't think I can post it easily but I was very surprised that they said that most of the robberies were NORTH of 466, not south as I thought. There also are golf cart's being stolen and I'm wondering if this is the same band of crooks, since golf carts are being used in these robberies? The police are determined to find these crooks so I'm sure we'll have a break in this case soon. My neighborhood has created a "unofficial" community watch but we will be formalizing more of it soon. We all agree, we need to watch out for each other.

I am getting two motion lights, one for the lanai and one for the birdcage, better safe than sorry. My "Handieman" will be putting them up this week.
