Default Reminder for Pool owners.

Pool Owners: with a hard freeze coming Sunday night into Monday morning, the best piece of advice I've seen is to let your pool filter run over night to keep the water flowing so nothing freezes in your pipes.

Most pool filters are on a timer, so you may need to go out and manually restart the system after it shuts down on Sunday so it will run overnight (ours runs from approx. 8:30a to 4:30p)

Oh, and probably a good idea to turn off the sprinklers as well to avoid a frozen line.

If you have a T&D pool with the Hayward system it has a Freeze Protection System that will turn on the pump when it gets to a certain temperature. You should open the valves to any waterfalls you have so water doesn't freeze in those pipes though.

If solar doesn't automatically drain, turn on valve so water is circulating.

If you have a salt water pool and plan to run the filter pump all night, turn down the setting on the chlorinator or you will risk having the pools chlorine level becoming too high.

Just one day off no big deal. Also how is warmer water flowing through an irrigation line running constantly going to cause a pipe to burst?

Do you run your irrigation system 24/7?

Pentair systems also have a freeze protection if they have been programmed correctly.

It doesn't have to be a T&D pool - any pool with full automation will have freeze protect built in. That includes Hayward Omni series, Pentair EasyTouch, and Jandy iAquaLink (these are the 3 major players in pool equipment).

Freeze protect is part of the operating system in these automation systems.

Having said that - we haven't been at freezing for anywhere near long enough for a pool to get frozen lines. We only hit 32 for a few hours, and lines are buried at least a foot deep. Even so, it doesn't hurt to run your filter overnight - if you have a VSP pump, you can run it at a very low setting and it'll cost you pennies.

Oops. The freeze was Saturday night, not Sunday night to Monday morning. Low of 35 tonight. Thanks for the good information, though.

Interesting, wasn’t aware that feature existed. Went to turn on the pump before bed last night and it was already on and there was a freeze protection mode displayed on the control screen.

Only below freezing for a couple hours and no wind. Not enough to freeze any significant water in pipes or filters.
