Polymeric sand is a good alternative. This is the stuff used in paver joints. Apply the sand to fill cracks, then apply water. It hardens similar to concrete but still has expansion properties.

Another option is Rapid Set makes a self-leveling sealant that is made just for this application. Just fill the expansion joints with sand or foam backer rod to a half inch from the top and use the sealant in the joint. You can also top it while it is still wet with a sand that matches the concrete and that will make the joints and cracks almost disappear.

Just run a screwdriver down the cracks once a year and use a leaf blower. No need to fill with sealer or other chemicals. Weeds don't grow where there is no soil.
