I think maybe some folks dress up a little when they go to a show at Savannah. And maybe they dress in clothes that they haven't worn a lot and maybe the togs smell of mothballs. Clothes can kinda get stale and stinky when hanging in a closet for a long time. You sure it was the carpet?

GracieGirl posts a very valid fact about the Savannah Center. We have lived here almost 3 1/2 years and the musty odor has been present since our first month (July 2009). It got worse when the carpets were updated and thoroughly cleaned the last time. The floor-drying fans are an almost constant "decoration" in the hallway and in most of the large meeting rooms. The main production (show) room isn't too bad but the floors aren't carpeted so the dampness wouldn't have a place to linger and mildew as much. Not certain what the issue is but it reminds me of buildings I used to work in up north that would get wet during rainy season due to roof leaks. The carpets and pads would get wet and never dry thoroughly. Then the mildew/mold smell would linger and linger until the carpets were changed throughout the building - a very expensive proposition.

While waiting for a show to open doors last month. the three of us sat in the corner behind the stuffed Peacock and it was ghastly there. Hard to imagine that one decaying bird might be the cause but I know one thing for sure, it was not clothing not much used and stored in mothballs. This smelled of dank, dark, unopened basements and mold.

It is a huge problem. Last Saturday Sweetie and I were practically holding our breath as we hurriedly passed through the hall to the parking lot.

I hope they figure it out. It can't be good for the folks who work there to be breathing that foul air all of the time..

Thanks Gracie! It was a fun show!

The Savannah Center smells like mold to me. Everytime I walk in that building it hits me. It's particularly strong on a rainy day. I have mold allergies, and it always acts up in that building..................which is very frustrating to someone who needs to sing. We were rehearsing last week and it started to smell like something was burning. We were getting ready to evacuate the theatre when they came in to tell us that they were testing the heating system. They really need to overhaul that building!

BUT on a brighter note, Sue Schuler who posts on this forum was brilliant and wowed us all with her voice and her choreography and sheer stage presence.

I felt her influence in many scenes that were just awesome.

I followed the suggestions in the " sing along" part and sang like I was in the shower but didn't remove my clothes.

Nice evening!

I must admit we have not attended many events at the Savannah Center but each time we did notice the "musty smell" as Gracie mentioned in her posts. Thanks Gracie for making it an issue that needs to be addressed. Many probably were thinking it was our imagination playing "tricks" on us. TV has a real need for a new and bigger Savannah center(with seats that this old' back can enjoy) but in the meantime let's hope there is a quick solution to the "musty" issue.

Wonder if their A/C drains are clogged, allowing the water to back up and stagnate.

I teach a yoga class there at 6pm but recently we had to change to Laurel Manor because the smell was so strong. One of the recreation guys told me that there are 25 exhaust fans but only 4 of them work. Can't do deep breathing when all you're breathing is a moldy-musty smell.

Went to a show there this summer with another couple and the musty, mold odor in the lobby was severe. It was after a stretch of heavy dowpours and we thought that they may have a roof leak but didn't see any ceiling stains.
Needs to be dealt with.
