There's a New Jersey guy, John Fox, who knows just about everything there is to know about hot dogs. If you're so inclined, you can read all about hot dogs on RoadFood.com. This link will take you to a thread started by John. It's now over 2,000 posts and goes back over 10 years. Even though the thread is titled New Jersey Hot Dogs, it's not all strictly about New Jersey.

Shickhaus is mentioned more than once in RoadFood threads. Do a search.
I followed the link. Rutt's Hut is mentioned 22 times. If you ever have a layover in Newark, and a serious hot dog foodie, take a cab there. Hebrew National all beef, natural casings comes close.

This link might have their secret relish recipe. click here I wonder if it can be crock pot cooked?

Grew up on Rutt's Hut rippers!! And their onion rings...to die for...in the greasy paper bag. So delicious. Now I want one

Anyone ever have Pearl Brand Country Club Franks?

I used to know the owner of the company. They're in the Boston area.

Homemade and the best. Great bacon too and now a second store in Petoskey.
No I haven't. We used to love to go up to Petoskey. Friends of ours had an art gallery there.

I hear you brother. That's why you never see a FAQ page on a hot dog web site.
