Have been taking noise reducing earplugs to concerts for years to keep from being deaf the next day.
Didn't need them. I'd guess Air Supply's sound mixer made that decision.

Good music doesn't need to defy OSHA standards for hearing loss.
Some of our local restaurants with live music could take this advice.
We sat in a box for that show. When they talked to the audience it was muffled. It thought it was where we were sitting. I was there again the next night sitting in the orchestra section. Same problem.

Every venue has flawed sound, some worse than others, but it in no way are the sound systems. It is all in how it's done.
Not sure what you are calling a "system", but the sound was bad. Personally, I would say that the sound engineer is part of the system that produces bad sound.

We attended the Beach Boys concert at the Sharon last year, and I had to leave in the middle of the performance because I couldn’t take the booming base and shrill sounds coming out of the amplifiers anymore. I wear hearing aids, and the sound was unbearable. The tickets were not cheap, and I was quite unhappy to have to miss half of the concert to preserve my hearing health.

I was there and thought it was OK. After the show, the person in front of us claimed she couldn't quite hear the words. I know the lyrics by heart, so that didn't matter to me.

Sound system is the entire HARDWARE setup, that includes mix, amp, speakers, filters, etc. The engineer is NOT part of the sound system.
