Default Sink Holes

We have had two in our neighborhood this year. One was along a street, but the most recent is below a home. A company is now pumping concrete under the foundation. Looks like a major operation. I have sink hole coverage under my homeowner's ins. Hope everyone else does!!

I've noticed this being done and wondered how the owners knew they had a problem. Does anyone know if it is something you will notice in your yard first or where the first signs appear? Cannot imagine how much this would cost!!!!!

Which villages/streets have experienced sinkholes recently?

Yes. Where is it? I imagine with the shoving around of dirt and the porous sand that underlays everything that the problem would emerge or submerge from time to time. I made them note on my one year "check up" that my garage floor sounded hollow in the middle...???

We had a friend with a sink hole a couple of years ago. They started noticing broken ceramic tiles, baseboards separating from the wall, and they had two broken windows in a short time period. After several visits from different home inspectors independent of The Villages and insurance company, both stated that there was a sink hole developing under the concrete pad. The insurance company sent out an inspector and reported that indeed there was a sink hole. After 26 loads of cement being pumped under their home all is well. I believe that several people within a few blocks of them had sink holes as well.

I have noticed on Morven Park Way crews pumping concrete under a house for the past two weeks and the street behind them also had a sink hole as did a pond near both occurring after Tropical Storm Faye.

The are called Depressions here in TV.. PRetty common small ones. If they have been pumping under the house for 2 weeks I would be worried. They pump grout or flowable fill into the hole. They drill hole or pins then pump under the house into the void to make it solid. The company doing it should be earthtech, i am sure that was on the mixer I was talking to. If you live next to retention ponds keep an eye for the pond to lose all the water if it has been holding the water. If it drains it all out, you will be able to see a hole opened up ususally.

There have been five or six sink holes in Winifred and Bonneybrook and Belvedere are two villages that are currently seeing problems.

Sinkhole problems in Belvedere Village. Do you know any more details?

My Florida house is in Belvedere, however I'm now in Canada for six months. Perhaps when I return I'll only be able to see the tip of my roof!

Default sinkhole questions

Are the current sinkholes occurring in newer villages or have these villages been completely built for several years? Does the state require any restrictions on construction with regard to sinkholes the way it does for hurricanes?

For what it's worth, here is a link to the State of Florida sink hole information page. It includes a map which shows the prevalance of sink holes by county throughout the state.
